Overview

Princeton’s School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) seeks an experienced and proactive Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to serve the School and University in their mission to build and sustain an inclusive environment. The Associate Dean will lead the development of a vision and strategy and accompanying initiatives to fulfill this mission and ensure a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community among students, faculty, and staff. The School, with an undergraduate major and three graduate degree programs, brings together people from across academic disciplines; from non-profits and government; from throughout the US and the world; and from many different ethnic, social and economic backgrounds. The interdisciplinary culture of the School enables scholarly breakthroughs that address a range of society’s pressing needs through applied public policy, including problems related to energy and the environment, health and wellbeing, security, and development. As a world-class school in the heart of a liberal arts university, SPIA is driven by a strong ethos of service and teaching and a commitment to preparing leaders in the 21st century.

Reporting to the Dean of SPIA, this newly-created role reflects the School’s conviction to build and sustain an inclusive environment, together with its deep commitment to Princeton’s institutional movement toward greater diversity and inclusion: “Many voices, one future.” The Associate Dean will plan, implement, assess, and refine the School’s efforts to diversify by partnering with a range of constituencies to increase access, retention, and success of historically underrepresented and marginalized populations. This work will extend across the SPIA educational pipeline (students, postdoctoral researchers, faculty) and administrative ranks, and will include racial and ethnic minorities, all gender identities, LGBTQ, first-generation and low-income students, those with disabilities, different political and social viewpoints, and others.

SPIA seeks a creative and entrepreneurial individual with a track record of success facilitating and supporting strategies and activities to recruit and retain a diverse complement of students, faculty and staff. This is a unique opportunity to facilitate transformative advancements in SPIA’s community. By gaining an understanding of the culture, being proactive in messaging, leveraging resources from across campus, and engaging the community in the process, the Associate Dean will be well positioned to promote critical DEI values and greater awareness of race, ethnicity, and policy and serve as a resource for enriching and strengthening the School.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of a vision and strategy and accompanying initiatives to fulfill the mission of sustaining an inclusive environment and ensuring a diverse and equitable community among SPIA students, faculty, and staff. Complement, augment, and/or amplify existing DEI and race, ethnicity, and policy related efforts and activities. Identify and contribute to strategic initiatives and policies to strengthen awareness of DEI that result in the application and accountability of related principles and practices across the School. Work proactively and in collaboration with students to address student-facing matters and by designing and executing events, workshops, and speaker engagements. Together with other SPIA administrators, serve as a resource and contact for SPIA students on a broad range of DEI related matters. Liaise with, provide consultative support to, and advise members of the School’s leadership team–including the executive vice dean, vice dean of strategic initiatives, associate deans, directors, and managers–in order to foster a shared community commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; ensure an inclusive School climate and diverse workforce; and promote equity and inclusion in SPIA’s administration, policies, and practices.
  • Collect, track, analyze, and present data related to diversity initiatives and climate. Provide regular feedback to dean, faculty, staff, and students on the effectiveness of the School’s efforts. Monitor and track peer and national trends and seek benchmarks for success, including suggestions for continual improvement. Engage with professional associations, national organizations, and peers at other schools of public policy and international relations to ensure that SPIA is adhering to best practices and appropriately and exhaustively leveraging its full complement of resources in support of its DEI mission and programming. Manage and provide consultative support for the evaluation of SPIA diversity-related activities and initiatives. Identify potential sources of funding for diversity programs, generate support data, and write proposals to secure funding (including sponsored research diversity supplements).
  • Serve in an advisory role as a resource for faculty recruitment committees. Provide counsel to committees on a wide range of DEI best practices in search and hiring of tenure and tenure-track faculty throughout the recruitment process in support of the University’s commitment to equal opportunity, nondiscrimination, and affirmative action. Provide committees with information and guidance on University policies and practices, considering such things as the diversity of applicant pools, short lists, and selectees; patterns of hiring; composition of search committees; avoidance of unconscious bias.
  • Serve as a resource for SPIA graduate admissions committees. Provide guidance on DEI best practices in the admissions process to ensure that entering cohorts are diverse; include a range of underrepresented populations; and reflect a broad spectrum of races and ethnicities, cultures and customs, religious beliefs, gender identity, sexual orientations, and political points of view.
  • Organize communications, messaging and programming efforts related to diversity and inclusion, including event planning and the development of content and strategy for social media in conjunction with the School’s office of public affairs and communications. Serve as a resource to the School’s public lectures committee and advise on the selection of visitors and guest speakers. Collaborate with the School’s communications team to ensure all products (articles, newsletters, websites, social media content, podcasts, videos, reports and publications, blogs, etc.) meet best practices for DEI, and effectively communicate and amplify SPIA’s DEI values, priorities, initiatives, and progress toward goals. Collaborate with SPIA alumni relations office to strengthen ties to alumni working on race, ethnicity, and policy.
  • Directly supervise the associate director of graduate student life and diversity. Collaboratively partner with colleagues in the Office of the Provost, Graduate School, Office of the Dean of the College, Vice President for Campus Life, Career Services, and other academic units– as well as through formal and informal campus networks — to create sustainable programming that provides opportunities for education, mentoring, training and social engagement.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will bring a deep commitment to and experience developing a strategy and capacity to advance ambitious diversity and inclusion goals. They will also demonstrate a proven ability to work effectively with students, faculty, administrators and leadership to ensure a diverse and inclusive community.

A masters or advanced degree in a related field and at least 7 years of relevant academic/professional experience is required. In addition, the successful candidate will have knowledge, demonstrated achievement, and understanding of the importance of a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment in a college or university setting. Demonstrated understanding and experience implementing different approaches customized for the various populations of faculty, staff, and students. Documented experience working with underrepresented students and faculty in higher education is strongly preferred. Demonstrated commitment and successful track record on diversity and equity programming with a broad knowledge of equity-related topics (Affirmative Action, Title IX, the American with Disabilities Act, etc.). Strong quantitative, qualitative, analytical, and presentation skills; excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and demonstrated use of discretion when handling confidential and sensitive information. Ability to build and maintain effective relationships and collaborate with a wide and diverse set of constituencies for teamwork and consensus building. Demonstrated leadership capacity and ability to work independently on concurrent projects under the pressure of multiple deadlines. Ability to thrive in a dynamic academic environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Doctoral degree preferred and a background that includes education and/or substantial work experience in public policy and international affairs, as well as prior scholarship or significant public policy experience related to race, ethnicity, and policy.
