Job Summary:
Furman University invites applicants for a tenure-track faculty position in Music Theory at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2022. Salary is to be determined by the experience and qualifications of the candidate. Job Description:

QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate must have a doctorate in Music Theory or a closely related field by August 1, 2022. Additionally, evidence of excellence in college-level teaching (which also includes teaching assistantships), and a record of significant professional activity are strongly preferred. Candidates whose professional work includes expertise in disciplines outside of the Western European art music canon are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will have the ability to work with historically underrepresented students, including students of color, and be committed to assisting the university in its continuing efforts to become a model of inclusive excellence.


  • Design and teach core courses in an undergraduate music theory curriculum.
  • Design and teach upper-level and elective courses based on the applicant's expertise and interests; possibly manage the theory/composition curriculum as expertise and interests allow.
  • Collaborate with multiple faculty teaching across entire theory curriculum.
  • Contribute, through teaching, scholarship, mentoring, and/or service, to our department's commitment to increasing diversity, promoting inclusivity, and advancing equity.
  • Contribute to all facets of the Department of Music including student advising, supervising undergraduate research, and committee service within the context of an undergraduate liberal arts college.
  • Maintain a professional profile that reflects the career of a distinguished teacher-scholar.
  • Other responsibilities would be based on qualifications, skills, and departmental needs.
