Four African Americans Who Have Been Hired as Diversity Administrators in Higher Education

Linwood B. Whitten was promoted to assistant vice president for diversity and international affairs at Alabama State University in Montgomery. He was previously interim assistant vice president of student affairs.

Dr. Whitten holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University. He earned a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs from Arkansas State University and a doctorate in chiropractic from Life University in Marietta, Georgia.

Jerima DeWese is the inaugural chief diversity officer and dean of diversity at Queens College of the City University of New York. Most recently, DeWese served as the chief diversity and affirmative action officer, Title IX coordinator, and ADA compliance officer at Purchase College of the State University of New York.

DeWese holds a bachelor’s degree in public administration/human resources administration and a master’s degree in urban affairs/public management from Queens College.

Aswad Allen is the new chief diversity officer at California State University, San Marcos. Since 2019, he was the chief diversity officer at Emporia State University in Kansas. Earlier, he was assistant dean of diversity and inclusion at the University of Colorado Denver

Dr. Allen earned bachelor’s degrees in sociology and psychology at the University of Colorado Boulder before attending Colorado State University for his master’s degree in student affairs in higher education administration and a doctorate in educational leadership and human resources.

Diane Forbes Berthoud is the inaugural chief equity, diversity, and inclusion officer at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. She was the associate vice chancellor of equity, diversity, and inclusion at the University of California, San Diego. She joined the staff at UCSD in 2011.

Dr. Forbes Berthoud holds a bachelor’s degree in communication from Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida. She received a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in organizational communication and social psychology from Howard University in Washington, D.C.
