University of Denver — Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities Management and Planning

University of Denver is seeking a strategic and forward-looking leader to serve as its next associate vice chancellor for facilities management and planning. The expected start date is March 2022.

Founded in 1864, the University of Denver (DU) is an independent, doctoral-granting university with high research activity and robust undergraduate and graduate education. DU enrolls approximately 14,000 students from across the United States and over 85 countries in its distinguished undergraduate liberal arts and science and graduate and professional programs. Since 2010, the university has seen a 44 percent increase in domestic students of color, from 18 to 26 percent of the student body. An additional four and a half percent are international students from over 85 countries around the globe. During the past 20 years, DU has invested more than $852 million in renovating, modernizing, and growing its campus. The Denver Advantage capital projects were completed within the last year as part of an innovative campus framework vision for the physical future of DU. The Burwell Center for Career Achievement and the Dimond Family Residential Village opened in Fall 2020, and the Community Commons opened in Winter 2021. The associate vice chancellor for facilities management and planning (AVC) reports to Leslie Brunelli, senior vice chancellor for business and financial affairs, and is a member of her divisional leadership team. As such, the AVC will be charged with leading a dynamic and comprehensive department that is deeply committed to supporting the mission of the University of Denver through its stewardship of the university’s physical resources and providing a healthy and safe educational environment for the campus community. Working closely with DU’s leadership, they will be responsible for facilities planning, personnel management, and oversight of the physical plant and annual capital improvement budget. The AVC will specifically be tasked with envisioning and leading operational and strategic initiatives associated with the university’s facilities, property, and infrastructure maintenance and management; custodial and grounds; operations; and energy management and conservation, and will also oversee construction and real estate acquisition and management.

The associate vice chancellor will join the university at a pivotal period in its history and will have the opportunity to collaborate with and serve as a key advisor to the university’s senior leadership on the updating of the university’s master plan. As a highly visible and connected campus leader, they will provide timely and effective communication to the DU community on the plans and progress of university projects, including convening meetings to announce plans, providing progress reports, and/or seeking input from a wide range of campus stakeholders. The AVC will develop and manage a complex departmental budget with multiple revenue streams, and also oversee the development, generation, and dissemination of critical facilities management reports, including key performance indicators and data on physical environment process and procedures. In support of the university’s sustainability plan and goals, the AVC will actively consult and collaborate with the campus energy engineer in the pursuit of energy conservation measures/concepts, and will be an active member and contributor to the university’s sustainability committee. Additionally, the AVC will lead efforts related to the development of new campus space standards, governance, and management of space and building data.

Facilities management and planning at DU comprises the following units: planning and design; construction; business operations; physical plant operations; mail and warehouse; and parking and mobility services. Fifty-five non-union and 217 unionized team members are charged with executing the care and maintenance of five million square feet of facilities and grounds that include nearly 90 buildings and three miles of city-owned streets within the campus boundaries. The associate vice chancellor oversees an operating budget of $30 million. 

A bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, management, or a related field; ten or more years of progressive responsibility as a facility manager of a highly complex organization, at least five of which must have included supervision of human, financial, and technical resources; or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Strongly preferred qualifications include a master’s degree in engineering, business administration, management, or a related field, as well as registration as a professional engineer in civil, mechanical, structural, or electrical engineering, or a licensed architect.

This position is an exceptional opportunity for a facilities management and/or planning professional with demonstrated knowledge of engineering and architectural principles and practices related to the design, construction, and restoration of buildings. The ideal candidate will have well-developed skills and a demonstrated record of communicating effectively with all levels of maintenance, trades, and management personnel, as well as demonstrated experience and knowledge needed to engage effectively with members of historically underrepresented communities.
