The primary responsibility of the Director of the James Center for Student Success and Advising (JCSSA) is to provide leadership and oversight to the JCSSA.

Duties and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Supervision of all staff (EHRA, SHRA and graduate students) reporting to the position: Associate Director of Retention Initiatives, Assistant Director for Student Engagement/ACES Director and Program Associate;
  • Provide JCSSA staff with support in the development of annual performance goals, feedback to improve or maintain job performance and identify areas for employee development. Review with employees job descriptions, job standards (expectations/objectives/duties) for the performance review cycle to ensure the appraisal relates to the specific responsibilities, job assignments, and standards that were conveyed to the employee for the year;
  • Lead the collaborative and strategic efforts of the JCSSA staff in order to support and advance the vision, mission, and core values of the JCSSA as they support those of the Reich College of Education and Appalachian State University; realizing these goals through direct programming and operational decisions; collaborating with center staff in the continuous improvement of these efforts, and maintaining an active outlook regarding equity, diversity, inclusion and inclusive excellence;
  • Provide leadership, oversight and support for activities related to academic advising, Appalachian Community of Education Scholars (ACES), Appalachian Educators, and other related programs facilitated by the Associate Director of Retention Initiatives and the Assistant Director for Student Engagement. Activities may include (not limited to): seminars, workshops, professional development and accompanying students on occasional overnight educational trips;
  • Provide leadership for the development, execution, and oversight for all budgets and expenditures within the JCSSA, including a $60,000 programming budget and expenditures;
  • Coordinate JCSSA program evaluation and assessment initiatives;
  • Foster equity, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of the James Center’s work in alignment with inclusive excellence efforts in the Reich College of Education (RCOE) and across Appalachian State University;
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with diverse stakeholder groups who contribute to the campus and statewide teacher education program success; including working with teacher education and other relevant faculty and departments across the campus; the families, public school partners, prospective students, alumni, donors, and campus administrators who maintain direct and active partnerships with the college;
  • Effective verbal and written communication and facilitation skills with a strong attention to detail; the director should be able to adapt their communication style to suit different audiences and maintain a consistent understanding of the communication needs of diverse stakeholder groups;
  • Action-oriented role model for lifelong learning; developing the concept of lifelong learning for the center staff and students; assisting the department staff in their professional development, creating environment for their continuing education and motivation; be involved in organizational activities and the development of the Department; and establish cooperation with other academic partners for the joint development and implementation of programs;
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director of Admissions for Teacher Education to support recruitment efforts and Education Peer Ambassador program;
  • Adjunct Instructor for CI 3531, Seminar on Teacher Leadership course;
  • Perform other assignments and needed and required; and willing to work evenings and weekends to support JCSSA, RCOE and university sponsored events.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Education, Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Student Development, or related field
  • 3 years of relevant professional experience in a higher education setting
  • Experience working with or leading and supporting student groups, associations and/or activities
  • Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
  • Knowledge of a student-centered/customer service-oriented philosophy is essential; Knowledge and understanding of the structure and chain of responsibilities within a university.
  • Possess excellent leadership, supervision, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends to support JCSSA, college and/or university events

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in Education, Student Development, Student Affairs, or other related fields
  • Five or more years of relevant professional experience in a higher education setting
  • Experience working with Residential Living Community programs
  • Experience planning and implementation of curriculum and programming around Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
  • Experience working with Scholar’s programs
  • Public school teaching experience
  • Higher education teaching experience- Education, Student Development, Student Affairs or other related areas
  • Experience with event/travel planning, coordination, and implementation
  • Experience developing and managing budgets
  • Demonstrated experience in a supervisory role
  • Experience advising, leadership and support to student groups, clubs, or organizations
