University of Virginia — Assistant or Associate Professor of Education, Youth and Social Innovation

The Department of Human Services in the School of Education & Human Development (SEHD) at the University of Virginia seeks energetic and creative applicants for a faculty position focused on youth development. This individual will have affiliations with the undergraduate Youth and Social Innovation (YSI) program and the graduate program in Educational Psychology – Applied Developmental Science. This is a tenure-eligible position that will be filled at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

The individual in this position will: sustain an active program of scholarship on positive youth development in family, school or community contexts, with a focus on race, ethnicity, identity, diversity, equity or justice; publish research results in high-quality peer-reviewed journals appropriate to the discipline; teach undergraduate and graduate courses; include graduate and undergraduate students in research activities; make appropriate service contributions to the program, school, and profession; and incorporate an equity and justice frame in research, teaching, and service.

Required qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Developmental Psychology, Educational Psychology, Social Foundations of Education or a closely related field by the start date of the position
  • An emerging or established program of scholarship on positive youth development in family, school or community contexts, with a focus on race, ethnicity, identity, diversity, equity or justice
  • Evidence of an explicit commitment to integrate principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion into teaching, research, and service activities.

Appointment at the Associate Professor level requires evidence of a research program with a track record of demonstrated success in publications in top journals appropriate to the discipline and efforts to obtain sponsored support.

Preferred qualifications:

  • A research program that complements our faculty’s existing areas of strength (e.g., mental health; family context; youth leadership development youth-led or youth-serving organizations)
  • Experience teaching courses on youth development that include a focus on racial and ethnic identity development
  • Experience working with and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in research and/or practice initiatives.

The Youth and Social Innovation undergraduate major attracts dedicated students interested in careers working with or on behalf of youth. Within an ecological framework that emphasizes positive youth development and a commitment to equity and social justice, the program integrates theory and practice with opportunities in both the university and broader community for students to develop and apply their knowledge. The Educational Psychology–Applied Developmental Sciences Program includes Doctoral and Master’s students who work closely with faculty to develop their skills for engaging in interdisciplinary research that takes a strengths-based approach to the study of children and youth in home, school, after-school, and community contexts. The program also offers undergraduate courses that provide a strong developmental foundation for students interested in the intersection of children’s development and applied contexts.

This position is one of three new tenure-eligible positions in the Department of Human Services with a shared focus on understanding and addressing issues of diversity and equity in youth development in family, school or community contexts: the other two faculty positions will be in Counselor Education and Clinical & School Psychology.

Faculty research on topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion is facilitated by four research centers in the SEHD that provide support for multi-disciplinary and collaborative research: Youth-Nex Center for Positive Youth Development; Center for the Advancement of Teaching & Learning (CASTL); EdPolicyWorks; and the Center for Race and Public Education in the South (CPRES).

The individual in this position will benefit from a strong and supportive network of diverse faculty at the SEHD who hold leadership positions in the School’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Center for Race and Public Education in the South (CPRES); and in the University’s Equity Center and Office of African-American Affairs, which is part of the University’s Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.
