University of Utah School of Music — Assistant Professor, Clarinet Performance


RANK/SALARY:  Assistant Professor, tenure-track. Salary commensurate with candidate’s credentials and experience. 

DUTIES: (1) Maintain a record of performances that indicates continuing growth and national/international visibility; (2) recruit and advise undergraduate and graduate clarinet majors; (3) teach studio clarinet, chamber music, wind literature, wind pedagogy, and other possible teaching assignments in support of the needs of the School of Music; (4) perform chamber music in collaboration with University of Utah faculty and/or external artists; (5) supervise undergraduate recitals, graduate recitals, and DMA documents; (6) contribute to the advancement of the Woodwind Area curriculum and the coordination of area instructors; (7) serve on committees, including doctoral supervisory committees; and (8) perform other appropriate college, university, and professional service. 

QUALIFICATIONS: (1) Earned terminal degree in clarinet performance or its equivalent in professional experience; (2) demonstrated evidence of successful applied teaching at the university level; (3) artist-level performer, vibrant solo, chamber, or orchestral career; (4) ability to connect with a broad range of students with diverse interests, experiences and backgrounds as evidenced through performance, pedagogy, and related activities. Commercial recordings are desirable. Preferred experience includes standard clarinet performance track record, as well as, New Music performance, or non-traditional repertoire. Community- based teaching experiences and community engagement activities are desirable. The strongest candidates will recognize that music has strong potential for social change through engagement with underrepresented communities, and their work will reflect this. The school is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and it has over 350 majors.
