POSITION OVERVIEW
The School of Kinesiology in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota is seeking an outstanding candidate to fill a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the field of physical activity and health promotion with a specialization in one of the growing areas including physical activity interventions for individuals with chronic diseases, physical activity and aging, obesity treatment and prevention, or decreasing sedentary behavior. The ideal candidate will also be interested in health disparities and equity and will help to support the newly established physical activity and health promotion minor and BS degree program, as well as the Kinesiology undergraduate and graduate degree program.

This is a 9-month, full-time appointment with a target start date of August 2022.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching (50%)

  • Broadly teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of kinesiology, physical activity and health promotion, physical activity epidemiology, exercise physiology, exercise psychology, or another related area.

Research (30%)

  • Establishing an active and independent research program in one of the areas of physical activity and health promotion. Candidates with expertise in a relevant sub-discipline such as physical activity interventions for individuals with chronic diseases, physical activity and aging, obesity treatment and prevention, and/or decreasing sedentary behavior are specifically encouraged to apply.
  • Seeking and securing external research funding to support research and other scholarly work. The applicant should have a demonstrated record of research productivity, such as a record of applying and securing external funding in areas directly related to physical activity and health promotion (e.g., from external funding agencies such as NIH, NSF, and/or large foundations).
  • Disseminating research findings through publication and presentation in the scientific community.

Service (10%)

  • Serving at the departmental, college and University levels, as well as in the greater professional field and community.

Mentoring (10%)

  • Mentoring and advising undergraduate honors, masters and doctoral students for thesis and dissertation research.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate (Ph.D. preferred) in kinesiology, health promotion, physical activity epidemiology, exercise physiology, exercise psychology or a closely related degree in the field of public health.
  • Evidence of a commitment to multicultural perspectives in the practice of physical activity and health promotion with the expectation to develop courses in health equity and programming.
  • Evidence of experience and effective teaching skills for undergraduate and graduate instruction in kinesiology, health promotion, physical activity epidemiology, exercise physiology, exercise psychology or in a closely related field in public health at the university level.
  • Record of research productivity demonstrated by publication in high-quality, peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A research interest and demonstrated record related to health disparities and equity.
  • Two or more years of experience as a postdoctoral researcher.
  • A record of research productivity that includes the submission and securing of external funding and a demonstrated record of high-quality, peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals.
  • Demonstrated willingness and/or experience in conducting interdisciplinary and collaborative research with colleagues in related fields.
  • Demonstrated experience in advising and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.
