Queens College of The City University of New York invites applications for the position of Dean of the School of Social Sciences. The School includes the departments of Accounting, Anthropology, Economics, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, and Urban Studies, as well as the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies (GSLIS) and all of the College’s business programs. The Washington Monthly recently ranked Queens College second nationwide for giving students “the best bang for the buck,” and the 2018 U.S. News America’s Best Colleges ranks Queens College eighth among “Top Public Schools” in its category Regional Universities-North. Our scenic 80-acre campus hosts over 16,000 undergraduates and over 3,000 graduate students. Under the consortial arrangement with The CUNY Graduate Center, many social science faculty also hold doctoral faculty appointments and teach doctoral classes and oversee dissertation research. The Dean works closely with the department chairs, reports to the Provost, and serves as the primary liaison between both parties.

The Dean, reporting to senior executive management, oversees a school, division, academic program and/or function to enhance its profile, visibility, and effectiveness. The Dean develops long- and short- range plans, and exercises management responsibility for academic program planning, faculty matters, and administration,including staffing, budgets, and facilities. The Dean fosters a high-quality environment of academic teaching, research, and intellectual achievement, and creates and strengthens partnerships within and outside the College as a strong advocate.


  • Provide leadership to develop excellence in funded research, and to enhance the research experiences of graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Lead students, faculty, college and university administrators, community members, and service providers in a variety of settings.
  • Oversee the establishment and development of the Queens College School of Business.
  • Pursue and monitor institutional grants and donor fund-raising activities.
  • Increase effective research, alumni and community outreach, and service programs.
  • Collaborate with departments to develop an overarching vision for student success and research, and communicate this vision to students, faculty, and external constituencies.
  • Advocate for and allocate school resources, including faculty and support positions, research and instructional budgets, research space and start-up funds.
  • Partner with faculty and staff in advancing the curriculum and developing new academic programs to address the changing needs of students and society.
  • Participate in recruitment and development of faculty and staff and in providing support to faculty.

This position is in CUNY’s Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and eight years’ related experience.


  • Earned doctorate degree and academic credentials appropriate for appointment as tenured full professor in one of the departments of the school.
  • Significant administrative experience at the level of department chair, dean, or similar, preferably in a Ph.D. granting institution. · Significant achievements in research based on grant and publication history.
  • Demonstrated record of innovative and creative solutions to meet strategic challenges

The successful candidate for the position of Dean will demonstrate a commitment to a diverse faculty and student body, a collaborative and collegial management style, and experience with promoting student success, facility renovation, and budget management.
