Job Summary:
The Center for Education Efficacy, Excellence, and Equity (E4) is partnering with Curriculum Associates (CA), a leading-edge online education company, to address educational excellence and equity through the development of an innovative research/practice partnership geared to produce evidence to improve outcomes for students with the greatest needs, especially given the impact of Covid-19.  This unique partnership brings together SESP researchers and CA to explore important research questions on student learning, with access to data and information on millions of children in our nation’s public schools who use their interventions and tools to improve learning outcomes.

Through this collaboration SESP education and social science researchers — along with graduate students, undergraduates, and the data analyst — will explore research questions and projects that have the potential to significantly improve teaching, learning, and student outcomes. The research agenda and subsequent projects will be developed collaboratively by Center partners on issues such as, but not limited to, how schools teach literacy and mathematics, fade-out effects of certain interventions, how schools operate as organizations, and how schools can effectively address the summer ‘slide’ of performance. Given the Covid crisis, numerous immediate questions also emerge, including how to help students make up and accelerate their missed learning opportunities. The 4E Center will also equally invest in impact and dissemination through the development of usable knowledge to assist educators and decision makers in their work.

The Data Analyst Lead will work with the E4 Center Director and report directly to the director. The Data Analyst Lead will engage in all aspects of the E4 Center as a thought partner of the director and will provide expertise in data management, quality assurance, analysis and reporting.  Establishes data accuracy and validity derived from a variety of systems. Performs data analysis using statistical techniques. Researches and analyzes information using multiple databases and creates reports of data and results. Responsible for maintaining confidential databases at Northwestern and preparing anonymized extracts for Northwestern researchers for approved projects. Collaborate on the development of the E4 Rapid Access Data Base.This position offers opportunities to work with leading education and social policy researchers and practitioners.

Acts as the lead for specific areas of analysis related to the design, implementation, support/maintenance, and enhancement of NU’s enterprise, vendor and in-house developed applications.  Formulates and defines systems scope and objectives based on both user needs and a thorough understanding of business systems and industry requirements.  Devises or modifies procedures to solve complex problems.

Instructs, directs, supports, and provides technical guidance to other business systems analysts and contractors and consultants, as necessary.

Specific Responsibilities:
Strategic Planning

  • Manages and influences school, department, and core office representatives to ensure that user requirements are met, all gaps are documented, and all deliverables approved (adhering to approved methodology and documentation standards).
  • Leads a team ensuring the proper installation, configuration, and functioning of enterprise systems.  Also manages knowledge transfer of contractors to staff at project completion.
  • Contributes to defining methodology and documentation standards, and periodically reviewing them to integrate appropriate industry practices.
  • Represents organizational area in regard to advisory groups, planning committees, and similar standing work groups whose purpose is to develop requirements related to the implementation of enterprise systems.


  • Reviews and verifies that documentation of training materials, process, procedures and system/application is accurate.
  • Identifies implementation dependencies and constraints; ensures these are addressed.
  • Leads project resources to ensure that tasks are completed on schedule and that issues, risks and variances are mitigated in a timely manner.
  • Development
  • Performs detailed testing to ensure that the implemented software functions correctly.
  • Manages iterative feedback processes among users, developers, and analysts to ensure software functionality aligns with requirements. Granted authority to make decisions based on knowledge of interdependency between systems and business processes.


  • Leads technical, reporting and application resources to analyze and resolve production issues in a timely manner.
  • Solicits feedback from users on application performance and escalates critical performance issues with technical resources and management. Granted authority to make decisions on solution approach based on in-depth system knowledge and best practices.


  • Leads work direction and/or staff such as team members, subordinates, contractors, vendors, students, etc.
  • Recommends staff hires/terminations. Writes position descriptions; leads recruiting process.
  • Coaches and mentors staff.
  • Manages complex projects ensuring timelines, deliverables and expectations are met.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree in a major such as computer science, information technology, or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)

  • Experience conducting data analysis/report writing or similar experience preferred.
  • Experience working with STATA, SAS, R or other programming languages preferred. Strong STATA skills preferred.
  • Experience working with large and complex datasets strongly preferred
  • Experience working with GIS and UNIX servers/other workstations preferred.
  • Advanced degree in education, the social sciences, and/or STEM-related fields coupled with research experience
