Massachusetts Institute of Technology — Intellectual Property (IP) Coordinator

MIT Open Learning seeks an intellectual property (IP) coordinator to evaluate third-party content identified by MIT faculty within their published online course materials for compliance with IP guidelines for MITx and OpenCourseWare (OCW).  Will provide training to faculty and associated staff in copyright, fair use, and use of openly licensed materials and maintain related IP databases and applications. 

MITx responsibilities (80%) will include evaluating course material of MITx MOOCs for third-party content; managing the IP clearance of MITx MOOCs using the MITx course management system; training MITx course teams about copyright and fair use based on the MITx IP policy guide and the use of the MITx CMS and IP portal application; and updating MITx IP documentation, including copyright guides regarding attribution, license requests, and permission request opportunities. 

OCW responsibilities (20%) include processing permission requests for third-party content within OCW courses; maintaining the OCW IP database listing content owned by third parties; and addressing questions from OCW staff and MIT faculty regarding copyright, fair use, and open access content. 

Will report to the IP manager.


  • Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Two years of experience in IP, preferably in an academic setting.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to accept personal responsibility for task fulfillment and job performance, work both. independently and as part of a team and interact effectively with people at all levels.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and follow-through.
