Position Summary

Student Conduct and Community Standards (SCCS) oversees the management, support, and assistance of students affected by Title IX and gender-based misconduct, and manages all student disciplinary matters, including academic and behavioral misconduct. SCCS is responsible for referring students to available resources, offering appropriate protections, and coordinating the University’s student investigation and adjudication processes. The Office does not act as an advocate but is a neutral resource available to all students. Student Conduct and Community Standards, in accordance with the expectations of students at Columbia University, upholds the highest standards of respect, integrity, and civility.

Reporting to the Director of Case Management, the Associate Director, Case Manager works closely with the Student Conduct and Community Standards (SCCS) team to provide students with information and access to resources. The Associate Director, Case Manager will serve as a point of contact for students and other members of the University community who are interested in learning information about reporting incidents of gender-based misconduct, both within the University and to law enforcement, and the resources available to those involved. The Associate Director, Case Manager is responsible for implementing and monitoring ongoing accommodations for students going through the discipline process. The Associate Director, Case Manager will also work with students who have reported incidents of gender-based misconduct and are seeking accommodations, but choosing not to engage in a resolution process. The Associate Director, Case Manager must be comfortable serving as a resource to students who have experienced gender-based misconduct and students who are accused of having violated the University’s Gender-Based Misconduct and the Interim Title IX Policy, and other relevant University policies governed by SCCS. The Associate Director, Case Manager regularly communicates and collaborates with various colleagues and University partner offices, including, but not limited to, Deans of Students, the University Title IX Coordinator, Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action, Residential Life, University Apartment Housing, Undergraduate Housing Services.

SCCS is situated within University Life, which comprises four departments: Student Life, Student Conduct, Religious Life and Community Impact. University Life is charged with overseeing and enhancing the student experience across all of Columbia’s undergraduate, graduate and professional schools.


A. Case Management. Provide information to students and University community members. Refer students to available resources for those who report sexual and gender-based misconduct and those involved with student conduct processes. Perform intake interviews to collect summaries of concerns and communicate possible courses of action with students, including sharing University resources, conduct processes and law enforcement, where applicable. Advise students of their rights under the Gender-Based Misconduct and Title IX Policy and Procedures. Meet with students to assess needs and create a case management plan. Collaborate with University partners to facilitate interim and supportive accommodations. Refer students to appropriate confidential and non-confidential resources when necessary. Document case information and updates, including monitoring interim measures, referrals and accommodations in Maxient database.

B. Collaboration and communication. Collaborate with other departments throughout the University to support the safety and well-being of students. Assess, create and implement successful methods of support to students who have reported and/or are engaged in the gender-based misconduct student conduct process.

C. Education, training and program development. Through professional organization involvement and independent research, the Case Manager is responsible for staying current on trends and issues related to the field of case management, sexual and gender-based misconduct, and student conduct. Educate the University community about resources available when seeking accommodation during a sexual and gender-based conduct process. Provide information, training and coaching to administrators, student groups and student leaders. Assist in the development, implementation and analysis of surveys to gain student and stakeholder input.

D. Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree and/or its equivalent in applicable field is required and a minimum of four years of related experience in the areas of case management, behavioral intervention or counseling. Knowledge of complexities surrounding sexual assault, sexual harassment and intimate partner violence cases and knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and applicable Federal and State laws. The Case Manager must possess excellent analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to exercise superior judgment and discretion. The applicant has demonstrated ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality. The applicant is able to handle multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of professionalism and attention to detail. The applicant will be comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced and detail-oriented environment.

Preferred Qualifications

The applicant demonstrates dedication to the principles and values of the field of case management and student conduct and has an understanding of FERPA, Clery, Title IX and trends pertaining to student conduct administration. Advanced degree is preferred in social work, student personnel administration, counseling, law, social work, psychology or related field.
