Overview

The Vice President for Academic Outreach will develop, launch and oversee a comprehensive strategy to extend Princeton’s educational reach and impact to adult learners and other non-traditional groups of students in ways that innovate while remaining consistent with Princeton’s mission and distinctive strengths. The position will report to the Provost and serve with other senior leaders as a member of the President’s Cabinet.

Princeton’s inaugural Vice President for Academic Outreach will have a unique opportunity to build a substantial program focused on non-traditional learners and new educational offerings for underserved groups of students, to shape strategy and to organize and recruit a talented team. Early efforts will focus on identifying goals, devising an institutional strategy, establishing critical path milestones and shepherding the resources and organizational structure necessary to achieve them. The success of these efforts will require effective positioning of Princeton’s academic outreach efforts both internally, by connecting with other offices and units, as well as externally through partnerships and relationships with other institutions, non-profit organizations, and foundations.

Potential programming for non-traditional students may include, but is not limited to, courses for credit, an expanded range of transfer opportunities, continuing and community education options, coursework and other educational experiences offered during the summer, innovative mentoring and advising services, and new degree programs.

The Vice President will work closely with and complement existing campus programs focused on pre-college support; bridge programming and other access and inclusion efforts for Princeton students, including the University’s traditional transfer program; the Prison Teaching Initiative, and community outreach efforts across the institution.

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include the following:

  • Identify new opportunities to leverage Princeton’s mission, advantages and resources to address the specific needs and aspirations of non-traditional students, with a particular focus on adult learners, in the local, regional, and national communities.
  • Foster and coordinate faculty, staff, and student contributions to academic outreach offerings, such as development and teaching of courses; providing mentored research experiences, offering summer on-campus opportunities; and developing a network of mentors and advisors to support non-traditional learners both on Princeton’s campus, while enrolled at partnering institutions, and potentially at one or more future off-campus locations.
  • Lead and influence within the University to develop and strengthen Princeton’s educational offerings available to non-traditional students. Shepherd initiatives through internal University processes and approvals, including socializing new ideas and directions with leadership and other key stakeholders. Craft proposals for new educational offerings (credit and non-credit), including the extension of existing programs to new populations, pursuing new modes of teaching and learning (e.g., on-line, hybrid courses) and the engagement of new partners. Ensure that promising new ideas excel through timely and successful implementation, by providing management, accountability, ensuring adequate resources and trouble-shooting.
  • Partner with other institutions serving non-traditional students to seek creative opportunities to support faculty and students at these institutions through collaboration, exchanges, and complementary educational experiences and mentoring.
  • Convene regularly the leaders of non-traditional educational offerings at Princeton to consider opportunities for collaboration, shared services and support; develop solutions to common problems or hindrances; and brainstorm on pathways for expanding impact of existing programs. Serve as the primary administrative resource and advocate for existing programs and offerings targeting these populations.
  • Network, liaison, and represent Princeton’s interests with external partners, such as other educational institutions colleges, foundations, and non-profit organizations, on program development, delivery, and coordination.
  • Develop a research framework for assessing the impact of educational outreach programs and the potential impact of proposed new offerings.
  • Engage nationally and regionally to ensure that Princeton is aware of the national dialogue, best practices, and innovative approaches involving educational offerings to non-traditional student groups.
  • Assemble, mentor, and lead a team to execute on the vision and strategy by devising innovative and effective academic programs and educational offerings tailored to the needs and aspirations of under-served and non-traditional populations of learners.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Seven or more years of experience developing and administering academic programs at a college or university;
  • Accomplished record of teaching and/or curriculum development;
  • Demonstrated success shepherding and launching major projects, including strategy setting and stakeholder engagement and collaboration;
  • Passion for serving non-traditional population of students;
  • Curiosity and the ability to understand, translate and incorporate interesting ideas and best practices from outside Princeton with balance of conviction and patience;
  • Networking, relationship-building, and persuasion skills, characterized by the ability to lead and contribute through ideas and influence rather than exerting hierarchical authority;
  • Extraordinary listening skills and humility necessary to be an effective ambassador with external groups and institutions as well as key campus partners; and
  • Advanced degree in liberal arts discipline or other relevant field.

Preferred:

  • Teaching and mentoring experience specifically with adult learners and transfers;
  • Familiarity with the regional higher education environment, institutions, and opportunities; and
  • Ph.D. in a relevant academic field taught at Princeton
