The Position:
The Assistant Vice Chancellor Human Resources Officer, CU Denver Campus will be responsible for providing operational, programmatic and consultative professional Human Resources leadership and support specifically to the Denver campus executive leadership team (Chancellor, Cabinet, Provost, CFO, CDO, Legal Counsel), and the senior administrators and HR Directors and staff within the Denver campus schools and colleges.

This is a hybrid position. The individual in this role will work primarily in-person on the Denver Campus, with some remote work opportunities.

Nature of Work:
This position is responsible for leading the design, implementation and continuous improvement of HR initiatives and programs for the CU Denver campus. The employment scope for the Denver Campus includes approximately 1000 Faculty and 800 Staff.

Professional Field: Requires deep generalist knowledge of Human Resources.

Supervision Received: This position will report initially to the Associate Vice Chancellor, Chief Human Resources Officer for the Denver|Anschutz Medical Campus, and indirectly to the Chief Financial Officer for the Denver Campus. Over time, this position is expected to report directly to the CFO for the Denver Campus.

Supervision Exercised: In the future, position will directly manage a small team of HR professionals.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Leveraging resources, programs and learning systems currently available through the Denver|Anschutz Human Resources team (Talent Acquisition, Compensation, Rewards and Recognition, Employee Relations & Performance, Learning & Development), the Denver campus school and college Senior Business Administrators/HR Directors, and the CU System and other offices such as Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, etc., this role is responsible for designing, delivering and facilitating targeted and cost-effective HR programs and initiatives for the Denver campus.
  • This is a working management role that will be the first point-of-contact for Denver campus HR needs, and will develop service agreements with campus and System HR groups as needed to provide HR services to the Denver campus.
  • Provide end-to-end project management for HR initiatives and programs (both strategic and tactical) identified as highest priority for Denver campus leadership.
  • Actively engage and partner with Denver campus academic and administrative leadership regarding human resources programs and issues, and coordinate/broker resources from the central HR areas and other offices (e.g., mental health support services) to address issues and meet needs.
  • The position is involved in various Denver campus strategic and operational/tactical working groups, providing senior level, expert professional HR guidance and interpretation to Denver campus leadership on all HR matters, including compliance requirements, Regent and Campus policies, laws, and regulations.
  • This position will, over time, be responsible for managing Denver campus HR processes, such as performance management cycles, pay administration, approvals for positions (“2nd level”), jobs postings, providing recruitment support for Denver-specific job openings, time and leave reporting, and other HR matters.
  • Act as a first point of contact for HR staff in the Denver schools and colleges for payroll and time reporting issues, and will serve on cross-campus and cross-System committees to define processes, workflows and systems related to HR operational activities.
  • Ensure that Denver schools and colleges are in compliance with all relevant campus and Regent HR policies.
  • Create, secure approval for, and administer any Denver campus-specific HR policies.
  • Work with the CDO, Denver Cabinet and others to address issues identified from culture and engagement surveys.
  • Serve as primary liaison to the Denver Campus Staff Council.
  • Programs may span the full HR talent management spectrum, from strategic to day-to-day operational, including recognition, employee engagement, events, employee communications, employee relations, organizational development, reorganizations and staffing changes, talent acquisition, employee wellness, employee health and safety, and HR process improvements.
  • Track, monitor and analyze results of implemented programs to facilitate continuous effectiveness and improvement.
  • This position may collaborate with other University offices on the delivery of online and compliance-related training programs.
  • This position may provide guidance and advice to the student employment areas for the CU Denver campus
  • Attends all Denver campus Senior Business Administrator meetings, and works closely with the campus Business Operations leaders (SBAs) and HR Directors in the Denver schools and colleges on HR issues. May attend Denver campus Cabinet and other senior leadership meetings.
  • Collaborates with the VC for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to support DEI programs and initiatives.

Salary and Benefits:
The hiring range for this position has been established at $97,601 – $140,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education in human resources management, organizational development, public administration, business or related field. Substitution: An unrelated bachelor’s degree and 2 additional years of professional, related experience may substitute for the related degree requirement.
  • 10 years of progressive professional HR generalist experience supporting a diverse workforce in a de-centralized organization.
  • 5 years of experience managing professional HR staff engaged in activities such as recruitment, employee relations, performance management and learning/training programs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education in human resources management, organizational development, public administration, business or related field.
  • HR Certification (CPLP, PHR, SPHR).
  • Experience in an HR leadership position in a higher education environment.
