Appalachian State University invites interested applicants for the position of Coordinator for Member Services to become a part of the University Recreation (UREC) team as we facilitate an inclusive environment where recreation and wellness opportunities transform, engage, and care for the App State community.

This position is directly responsible for the overall management and coordination of all membership programs at the Student Recreation Center (SRC), Quinn Recreation Center, and Mt. Mitchell Fitness Center. This includes but is not limited to membership satisfaction, outreach, engagement, orientation, appreciation, and assessment. Additionally, the Coordinator of Member Services provides leadership for all the UREC student employee recruitment and on-boarding experiences. The Coordinator for Member Services supervises and provides development opportunities to a team of 25-30 student employees. This position directly reports to the Associate Director of Operations.

You will have the opportunity to:
Member Services

  • Design and lead a Membership Welcome Program that standardizes the way in which University Recreation welcomes new members into our facilities, programs, and services.
  • Coordinate direct member communications including, but not limited to newsletters, website, and membership brochures, forms, and flyers.
  • Develop, manage, and coordinate the overall UREC Student Employees Onboarding Program.
  • Perform membership assessments including the coordination and compilation of statistical data including membership revenue and expenses, membership retention, and membership satisfaction.
  • Develop Standard Operating Procedures and Training Materials for Fusion Point-of-Sale Transactions, Activity Registrations, Equipment Rentals, and Facility Reservations.
  • Collaborate and coordinate Outreach Sessions with on-campus partners such as University Housing, Student Engagement and Leadership, Admissions, etc. to inform and educate students about University Recreation facilities, programs, and services.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

  • Hold self, students, and staff members accountable to departmental expectations of creating an inclusive environment at UREC facilities.
  • Promote inclusive ways to advocate for the needs of all students.
  • Maintain sensitivity to different perspectives and identities.
  • Challenge cultural norms to explore change.

Staff Development

  • Develop, coordinate, and lead student development opportunities that focus on the growth and development of student employability skill sets.
  • Actively engage in reflection of personal identity and how it influences work with students and colleagues, which includes professional development opportunities.
  • Recruit, retain, and mentor a diverse crew of 25-30 Member Service student staff that represent the App State community.
  • Design and implement departmental staff appreciation initiatives.
  • Facilitate and develop a culture of care and learning environment that contributes to building a sense of belonging that supports UREC’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Teach CPR, AED, and First Aid classes for University Recreation Student Staff and App State community participants.

Fiscal Management

  • Ensure continuity in departmental and university business practices across all areas of Facility Operations (i.e Cash Handling and PCI Compliance, Incident / Accident Reporting, Member Confidentiality and Information Security, Member and Student Misconduct, etc.)
  • Budget, track, and reconcile all expenses related to the Member Services Program on a monthly basis.
  • Assist in the annual budgeting process for University Recreation. This includes developing, forecasting, and reporting on revenues and expenses related to your administrative area. Total budgetary oversight is $309,000 within a $5.3 million budget.

Risk Management

  • Responsible for maintaining a safe environment for individuals who participate in University Recreation facilities, programs, and services.
  • Provide ongoing risk management training for the Member Services staff.

Departmental Leadership and Support

  • Participate and actively engage in the UREC Leadership Team initiatives by model UREC mission and vision.
  • Contribute to department-wide initiatives and opportunities through participation in committees, work teams, and tasks to contribute to the mission of UREC.
  • Establish effective and positive rapport with program staff, university personnel, students, and University Recreation users.

At a minimum you should have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Sport Management, Athletic Administration, Business Administration, Kinesiology, or related field.
  • Experience in a similar position in a college setting: one (1) year as a full time professional or two (2) years as a Graduate Assistant

The preferred candidate will have:
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the following areas:

  • Master’s Degree in Recreation, Sport Management, Athletic Administration, Business Administration, Kinesiology, or related field.
  • Demonstrated proof track of active working involvement on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Basic principles of student development and university recreation programming.
  • Managing Innosoft Fusion software application platform or any other point of sale/access software.
  • Nurturing and developing collaborations.
  • Active engagement in NIRSA, NASPA, ACPA, or other higher education professional associations.
