Three African Americans Scholars Who Have Been Named Deans

J. Lee Brown III is the new dean of the College of Graduate and Continuing Studies at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina. Dr. Brown previously was at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina, where he most recently served as interim provost since 2020. He previously served as dean of the Broadwell College of Business and Economics at the university.

Dr. Brown earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from North Carolina State University, an MBA from Strayer University, and a Ph.D. in strategy and international business from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

Ramona Denby-Brinson has been appointed dean of the School of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was a professor and associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Social Work at Ohio State University, where she has worked since 2019. Earlier, Dr. Denby-Brinson was associate dean for research with the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions and professor in the School of Social Work at Arizona State University.

Dr. Denby-Brinson earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from Arizona State University. She holds a master of social work degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and a doctorate in social work from Ohio State University.

Karen C. Goff was appointed dean of students at Oberlin College in Ohio, effective September 20. For the past five years, she has been vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia. Earlier, she was the chief student affairs officer at Georgian Court University in New Jersey.

Dr. Goff holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and history from Georgian Court University and a master of divinity degree with a concentration in counseling from Nyack College in New York. She holds an educational doctorate from Northeastern University in Boston.
