Southern Methodist University — Assistant Director for Marketing & Communications (Residence Life and Student Housing)

Job Summary:
Residence Life & Student Housing (RLSH) at Southern Methodist University (SMU), is seeking an Assistant Director for Marketing and Communications to lead and coordinate social media, marketing, and communication within the three areas comprising the department. The area of expertise for this position is marketing for the recruitment of first-year, transfer, graduate and adult learner students, and helping to facilitate the university’s recruitment services in coordination with the Division of Enrollment Services and the Division of External Affairs. This position will work with the Director for Academic Initiatives to ensure all areas are being covered appropriately, and use data to make strategic decisions about recruitment and outreach initiatives. The Assistant Director is expected to regularly review, evaluate and adjust strategy based on analytics and recommend new channels, tactics, and technologies to achieve organizational objectives.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for developing, writing, reviewing, and disseminating all marketing and promotional communications for current/prospective residents via various channels and mediums, including the social media environment, which promote the attributes of the Residential Commons model and RLSH-managed housing.
  • Recruits, hires, evaluates, trains, and supervises the RLSH Street Team, a student-led, marketing and communications team of 5-10 students who provide administrative and content-generation support for the department. Serves as a representative on relevant departmental and divisional committees to support marketing and communication efforts.
  • Coordinates with university partners (e.g. Student Affairs Administration, Division of External Affairs) in producing specific marketing pamphlets ensuring content is aligned with brand standards. Facilitates the identification of decorations and marketing of departmental show rooms for university tours. Collaborates with admissions to ensure tour scripts are accurate related to housing.
  • Serves as content manager of Residence Life & Student Housing websites. Housing website represents the largest single departmental website for content management. Maintains 360-room tours to aid admissions decisions for students who are unable to tour. Develops and monitors RLSH social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, ISSUU, YouTube, etc.)
  • Updates and enforces departmental policies as they pertain to posting fliers and other advertising products and solicitation. Serves as the official spokesperson for Residence Life & Student Housing for recruitment events, fairs, and student/parent orientation.
  • Manages and reconciles a marketing and communications budget. Performs requests for proposals, purchasing, and invoice payments related to the area. Evaluates strategy based on analytics and recommends new channels, tactics, and technologies to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Support the implementation and realization of the goals and learning domains in the Student Affairs strategic plan and RLSH strategic plan, including other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Field of study in Higher Education, Marketing, Communication, Advertising or related field is highly preferred.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of successful, relevant experience is required.
  • Previous experience in admissions and knowledge of recruitment practices in a college or university setting is preferred.
  • Experience and knowledge of university housing programs is also preferred.
  • Experience working with a diverse student population is required.
  • Ability to develop recruitment programs, create effective materials, and experience planning and coordinating group events is required.
  • Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) are required. Experience with Slate, Adobe Creative Suite, Qualtrics, Canvas, Hootsuite, ISSUU, or like programs is preferred.

  • Candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interface effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be attentive to detail, accuracy and ability to appropriately handle budgetary data, procurement, and monitoring of expenses.
  • Candidate must possess excellent organizational skills that include effective planning, time management and project management.
  • Candidate must demonstrate strong problem solving skills and analytical skills. Problems require new approaches and creative problem resolution.
  • Must be willing and able to occasionally work weekend and evenings related to large-scale department and residential community events.
