The Rutgers School of Public Health, Social Justice, & Health Equity — Postdoctoral Diversity Training Program

The Rutgers School of Public Health is committed to recruiting and creating pathways of success for highly skilled emerging professors who can contribute to and support the School’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.  The School, which is directed by the tenet of social justice and health equity, seeks to develop a diverse faculty that reflects its commitment to serve the diverse people of our state, to maintain the excellence of the School, and to offer our students richly varied disciplines, perspectives, and ways of learning. 

With a focus on attracting and recruiting a diverse group of scholars, the School is establishing the Social Justice & Health Equity Postdoctoral Diversity Training Program. The program provides two calendar years of support. The training program seeks to recruit public health scholars who can contribute to and support the School’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and enable such individuals to establish their careers within New Jersey and increase the number of federally funded grants to the state. The inaugural Social Justice & Health Equity Fellow will commence tenure on or about September 1, 2021. 

The Social Justice & Health Equity Postdoctoral Diversity Training Program will create a pathway for promising emerging scholars as well as the conditions for diversifying the professoriate at the Rutgers School of Public Health.  As per the School’s newly adopted strategic plan, commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion represent three of the School’s core values and attend to the population’s shifting landscape within New Jersey and across the United  States. Recruiting and retaining emerging scholars who can offer diverse socio-cultural perspectives and experiences will enrich the Rutgers School of Public Health. A diverse community is essential to creating an intellectually challenging and inclusive educational environment.  

We will recruit scholars from across the United States but will give preference to long-time New Jersey residents as to ameliorate the brain drain of scholars who reflect diverse socio-cultural perspectives and experiences from our state. Selected scholars will be matched with and receive mentorship from a faculty member within the School and will partake in all mentorship programs at the School and Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences. Scholars will partake in educational programs that will further develop their scholarship, including grant writing, providing opportunities for and guidance with teaching, and professional development to undertake community-engaged research. In addition to the postdoctoral salary, the scholars will receive a research stipend to support and advance career goals by attending conferences, conducting pilot studies, publishing, and more. As a commitment to excellence in education, Fellows also will teach two courses per year with guidance from their mentor and leadership of the  School.  

Eligible scholars will be individuals who (1) have demonstrated an ability to support the School’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and (2) are within three years of completing their doctoral degrees with a degree in public health, biomedical sciences, social sciences, or a related field. The scholar must work in a domain of expertise including but not limited to at the Rutgers School of Public Health and must identify a primary Rutgers School of  Public Health faculty member who can serve as a mentor from among the faculty shown at 

The 12-month salary is $60,000 including benefits and a research stipend of $7,500.
