CLIC Summary

The Northeastern Center Law, Innovation and Creativity (CLIC) is dedicated to the advancing interdisciplinary research and dialog on critical issues relating to law, technology, and social justice. The Center is the hub of innovative, social justice-oriented research and programs associated with law and technology. We host an annual conference, an annual academic workshop, multiple conferences and events. We are also the home of more than 50 affiliate scholars interested in law and technology from around the world. Housed within the School of Law (NUSL), the Center's affiliated faculty have appointments across Northeastern University's schools and colleges, and conduct research on a wide array of issues, including privacy; automated decision-making, algorithmic accountability, and algorithmic fairness; online harassment; technology, surveillance, and marginalized communities (including race, gender, ethnic, and sexual minorities); internet and information security; Science and Technology Studies; intellectual property; and constitutional law and human rights. The Center supports a broad curriculum in law and technology, and sponsors conferences, lectures, colloquia, and workshops that introduce students to career opportunities in related fields. Position Summary

The Director will work with the Faculty Director to implement a strategic plan for bringing NUSL's technology focus to the next level and, with direction from the Faculty Director, will provide long-term and day-to-day leadership and management of the Center. The Managing Director will have responsibility for organizing all aspects of the Center's lectures, colloquia and conferences, will help recruit and take the lead in supervising and providing support for one or more research fellows, will be responsible for grant-writing and supporting the Center's externally-funded research, will propose and manage the Center's budget, and will work with the Faculty Director and the Director of Development to create an Advisory Board. The Managing Director will also work with the Dean, Associate Deans, and the Director of Online and Hybrid programs to develop new and expand existing non-JD programs relating to CLIC.

The Managing Director, in conjunction with the Director of New/Alternative Markets, will also identify new opportunities and conduct employer outreach.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify opportunities, both inside the University and among outside foundations, donors, and governments, for grant-funded research and programs, as well as write grants and coordinate grant-funded research projects by CLIC faculty.
  • Provide long-term and day-to-day leadership and management of the Center, manage the Center's budget, and supervise multiple student volunteers and manage CLIC programs.
  • Organize the Center's lectures, colloquia, and conferences.
  • Work with the Center's Faculty Director and affiliated faculty to implement the Center's strategic plan.
  • Work with the Director of Communications on the marketing of NUSL as a locus of law and technology scholarship.
  • Launch the CLIC blog and supervise, edit, and provide feedback to students, faculty, and affiliates writing blog posts.
  • Coordinate interdisciplinary research in law, technology, and social justice.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal Managing Director will have spent time on the frontlines of public interest or policy work in one or more areas related to intellectual property, technology, information security, privacy regulation, entertainment, and media law. The Managing Director must be a flexible team player. The ideal candidate will be able to make independent decisions, think outside the box, propose new ideas, and be committed to supporting faculty and student growth.

-JD degree.
-2-6 years of experience in fields related to law, technology, and/or social justice.
-Demonstrated commitment to Diversity and/or Social Justice
-Ability to work independently, to think and solve problems creatively, and to function and communicate effectively within a team and across multiple constituencies including faculty, students, and administrators.
-Strong organizational, planning, interpersonal, and communication skills (written and verbal) required


Preferred Qualifications:

-A track record of grant-writing is preferred or a willingness to learn the grant writing process.
-Fluency in social media and a willingness and ability to leverage social media to amplify the Center's work.
-Connection to a national network of professionals
-Administrative and event planning experience
