Position Summary

The University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music seeks an educator, artist, and scholar to join our faculty in the Fall of 2022 in a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies and Commercial Music. The successful candidate should demonstrate a strong commitment to conducting creative and scholarly activity in jazz and musics of the African diaspora and to inclusive pedagogy. This individual will contribute to the innovative training of the coming generations of Lamont graduates as stylistically nimble, entrepreneurial, and technologically skilled artist-citizens committed to the public good.

Essential Functions

  • Chair the Lamont Jazz Studies and Commercial Music program (mentor and advise students, oversee the curriculum, assign small jazz groups, manage program budget).
  • Direct the Lamont Jazz Orchestra.
  • Teach courses in jazz composition and arranging and courses based upon areas of interest and expertise (e.g., improvisation, jazz history and culture, Afro-diasporic musics, ethnomusicology).
  • Actively recruit students, internally and externally, to the Lamont School of Music.
  • Build professional relationships with local, regional, and national jazz institutions.
  • Maintain an active and visible national/international profile.
  • Serve on School of Music and University governance committees as assigned or elected, audition committees for incoming students, and recital boards and/or examination committees for graduate students.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Music or equivalent advanced degree.
  • Potential to lead a collegiate jazz program.
  • Record of success in directing a large jazz ensemble, composition, and performance.
  • Commitment to teaching excellence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant and sustained professional distinction in jazz and commercial music.
  • Experience teaching composition and arranging at the college level.
  • Potential for scholarly contributions to the field of jazz studies.

Salary Grade Number
The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $68,000 – $74,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
