Position Summary

Reporting directly to the Associate Vice President for Student Conduct and Community Standards, the Director of Student Conduct is responsible for supporting students in maintaining a safe, honest, and responsible campus community by responding to all reports of academic and non-academic misconduct. Partnering closely with Deans of Students/Student Life offices, University Life, the Office of the General Counsel, the Academic Affairs offices, and the Department of Public Safety the Director of Student Conduct will oversee staff in the coordination and administration of the Dean’s Discipline process for behavioral and academic integrity violations. The Director of Student Conduct will serve as a resource for members of this community, managing the implementation of behavioral expectations and policies in a way that is both accessible and transparent; provide outreach to faculty about responding to and preventing academic integrity violations; coordinate systems and statistics in compliance with law and regulations; and oversee the development of educational programs promoting community standards. The Director of Student Conduct serves on the Student Conduct and Community Standards leadership team which includes the Director of Title IX and Gender-Based Misconduct Investigations, Director of Operations and Director of Case Management & Alternative Resolutions. The Director of Student Conduct also works collaboratively with the Associate Vice President for Student Conduct to assist in the planning and vision/mission crafting for Student Conduct and Community Standard. The Director of Student Conduct will also act as deputy in the AVP’s absence.

Responsibilities

  1. Leadership and collaboration. Collaborate regularly with Dean of Students/Student Life and University Life offices, Residential Life, Academic Affairs offices, the Office of the General Counsel, Registrar, Public Safety, Athletics, and faculty to review and assess student conduct matters and disciplinary policies and procedures. Maintain standards and sanctions with the overarching goal of fundamental fairness and ensure that all student conduct-related endeavors are transparent to students and stakeholders. Serve as a liaison for graduate and undergraduate schools to appraise consistency in policies and procedures.
  2. Adjudicate cases. Lead and manage the Dean’s Discipline hearing process that emphasizes education and individual accountability, in addition to personal and community responsibility. This includes the coordination of the investigatory process, leading disciplinary hearings, and administration of all related documentation, including notice, file review information, outcome letter and associated correspondence. As necessary, it also includes the implementation of sanctions ranging from disciplinary warning through expulsion from the University. Within the parameters of FERPA regulations and as applicable, advise families of students involved in the Dean’s Discipline process. Refer students to other resources or departments for additional assistance when necessary. For cases appealed, compile student file information and review file information with the appellate officer.
  3. Title IX and Gender-Based Misconduct. On rare occasions serve on hearing panel for complex and nuanced Title IX Gender-Based Misconduct hearings. In addition to serving on hearing panels, the incumbent is responsible for special projects or assignments, including assisting with Title IX investigations when needed, committee involvement, trainings, faculty outreach, etc. the director will also be trained on Title IX and Gender-Based Misconduct compliance and investigation and will partner with investigators and case managers within the Student Conduct and Community Standard office as needed.
  4. Record management and compliance. Ensure compliance for internal and external release of records: on a need-to-know basis. Ensure compliance with ADA Section 504 by working with Health Services (Counseling and Psychological Services, Primary Care, and Disability Services) and Housing and Dining to provide support and follow-up for students with disabilities involved with Dean’s Discipline. Through the Dean’s Discipline process, review, respond to and categorize allegations of copyright violations falling under the terms of the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
  5. Research and review of policies. Work with the Deans of Students to review and recommend an appropriate course of action for university, school, and department policies and protocols. This includes but is not limited to the readmission/withdrawal process, record expungement, records management, and parental notification. Serve as a member of the University compliance network and assist with compliance-related efforts impacting the University.
  6. Emergency management/Behavioral Intervention. Collaborate with appropriate campus partners to review and triage incidents involving students of concern in consideration of best practices around the intersections of mental health and behavioral misconduct.
  7. Training. Provide information and training to administrators, faculty, graduate student instructors, and student groups on topics including, but not limited to: Dean’s Discipline, sanctioning, compliance, academic integrity, incident reporting and documentation, proctoring examinations. Train faculty and staff on Title IX issues, FERPA, reporting and other topics as assigned. Partner with stakeholders to assist in education and training efforts for students.
  8. Supervision. The Director of Student Conduct supervision portfolio ranges from two to four Associate Directors and one graduate student. The Director reports to the Associate Vice President for Student Conduct and Community Standards.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree required. Advanced degree in a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of relevant professional and progressive experience required, with preference for student conduct experience in a complex higher education setting. Understanding of student conduct as it relates to student life, academic integrity, leadership development, conflict resolution, and legal issues in higher education strongly desired.
  • Excellent analytical abilities and strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Highly developed diplomatic skills and discretion in dealing with sensitive and complex disciplinary actions and judicial issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing and in verbal presentation, and experience in applying and analyzing policies and procedures consistently and with openness and fair-mindedness.
  • Personal integrity that inspires trust and creates an atmosphere of shared goals, mutual respect, and collegial teamwork.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Experience working in a team-based diverse urban setting within a fast-paced, highly complex decentralized organization.
  • Ability to discern the level of decision-making authority required to resolve policy and operational issues.
