Job Description:

The College of Wooster is seeking an Assistant Director of Residence Life. Assistant Directors (ADs) are an integral part of the Residence Life Team. The Assistant Director is an employee of the Division of Student Life. They are full time professional staff that have a significant amount of student contact through supervision, advising, conduct, responding to emergencies and living on campus. The Assistant Director is expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner to best serve as a role models for students and the staff they supervise. In meeting their responsibilities, they are to report directly to the Director of Residence Life.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (to be incorporated into all of the categories listed below):

  • Actively work towards diversity and inclusion efforts of the Office of Residence Life, the Division of Student Affairs, and the College of Wooster's Strategic Plan.
  • Demonstrate inclusion and respect for all people regardless of age, sex, color, race, creed, religion, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or political affiliation in accordance with the College of Wooster Non-Discrimination Policy.
  • Utilize inclusive practices to facilitate programs and initiatives with particular emphasis on those that promote equity and inclusion within the student residential experience.

Community Engagement and CARE:

  • Create and maintain an environment that protects the rights and responsibilities of students within the community by upholding the Scot's Key and other College policies, and facilitating community conversations, as needed.
  • Serve in the on-call rotation to respond to calls from RAs, Campus Safety and Deans on-call. On-call includes being available to respond in person within 10 minutes on a schedule developed in the department.
  • Provide wellness checks as requested for students in crisis.

Supervision and Staff Selection:

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate 14-17 RAs and one Graduate Area Director to support approximately 800 residents.
  • Present training sessions, including in-sessions and other professional development opportunities for both peers and RA staff.
  • Support RA programming: model effective programming efforts, offer advice, and suggestions for improvement, manage annual budgets, shop for program supplies, and other needed tasks.
  • Lead community building efforts in your area and support the RA staff in floor community building efforts to ensure residents' needs are met.

Campus Partnerships:

  • Participate in division wide initiatives and programs, such as MLK Day and IS Monday.
  • Hear cases in the student conduct process assigned by the Director of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Attend conduct meetings, board proceedings and trainings, regularly.
  • Assist in crisis response as needed in the event of a campus emergency.

Administrative:

  • Create and manage the On-Call Schedule at the RA level.
  • Coordinate Student Staff coverage during break housing periods.
  • Respond to parent and student concerns and questions. Escalate appropriately.
  • Facilitate the room change process by working with the Housing Coordinator.
  • Create and update documents, including newsletters and residential guides, as needed.

Building Operation Responsibilities:

  • Create and manage systems designed to provide smooth check-in/check-out processes for students, while maintaining clean and clear hallways, stairwells, lounges, and outer grounds.
  • Maintaining appropriate records of room condition reports.
  • Assist Campus Safety with room searches as needed.
  • Complete room inspections and helping to maintain accurate records of the condition of student rooms at the beginning and end of the year, as well as each time room changes are made.
  • Bill appropriately for any damages noted in the Residence Halls and/or Houses.
  • Report housekeeping and maintenance problems.


Requirements:

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree in Student Personnel or a related field and three to five years or relevant experience.
  • A commitment and experience with equity and inclusion within the College or University setting is critical.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a wide variety of individuals, experience with student support and crisis intervention are essential.
  • Specific experience with database management and organization necessary.
  • An understanding of the relationship between the academic and co-curricular programs and student rights and responsibilities at an independent liberal arts institution is highly desired.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to assist with moving and setting furniture in lounges and student rooms.

Compensation for the position includes:

  • Salary commensurate with the range established by the Office of Human Resources.
  • A fully furnished apartment in a Residence Hall on campus. The apartment will include a kitchen, dining area, bedroom, and private restroom.
