Brandeis University — Associate or Full Professor, African and African American Studies Department

The Department of African and African American Studies (AAAS) at Brandeis University seeks an interdisciplinary scholar of African Studies for a full-time, tenure-track position at the associate or full professor level. Applications from exceptional advanced assistant professors who would be immediately tenurable will also be considered. The successful candidate’s term will begin in the Fall of 2022. This position is subject to budget approval.

We seek applicants whose research and teaching interests focus on contemporary African affairs, with a special emphasis on the dynamic relationship between society, politics, economics, and culture. We are especially interested in scholars who are able to think through and, importantly, beyond the lens of development. Scholars working on contemporary social movements, radical politics, youth cultures, gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, and new media, or any combination thereof, are encouraged to apply. So too are scholars who can bring fresh analytical perspectives to the interrelated phenomena of migration and diaspora within and beyond the African continent. We also seek a scholar who will draw on their expertise in both theoretical and applied social science research to introduce students to qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.

In addition to candidates with PhDs in African Studies, we welcome applicants who hold a PhD in other relevant interdisciplinary fields, such as Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies; Global Development; Legal Studies; and Environmental Studies, or in a relevant social science discipline, such as, but not limited to Geography, Politics, Sociology, and Economics. We also welcome scholars based at African institutions to apply. In addition to possessing a strong research, publishing, and teaching profile, the successful candidate will also have a demonstrated record of leadership and/or a desire to take on a leadership role within the department. The course load is 2/2.
