This position is primarily responsible for managing the overall vision, administration, fiscal management, implementation, and supervision of the Fitness and Wellness Programs with University Recreation.

The Assistant Director of Fitness and Wellness reports to the Associate Director of Programs.

You will have the opportunity to:

Program Operations

  • Coordinate the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of student staff including one Graduate Assistant, 15-20 Group Exercise Instructors, and 8-12 Personal Trainers, 4 Program Managers, and 25-30 Weight Room Attendants.
  • Develop and implement a plan to intentionally create inclusive opportunities integrating Fitness and Wellness initiatives.
  • Provide programming leadership including general fitness, group exercise, personal training and educational workshops for students, faculty and staff.
  • Provide institutional leadership with our campus collaborators to maintain and further develop the AppState Gold Rated Exercise is Medicine program
  • Develop and maintain an Instructor Training Program to educate new and existing student staff members.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to the Graduate Assistant for Fitness while creating a working environment that fosters growth and student development.
  • Create, manage, and supervise comprehensive and diverse fitness offerings.
  • Design and implement all fitness and wellness outreach strategies including social media, website, and special events.
  • Manage the scheduling for all staff to ensure adequate staff coverage for all programs and facilities including weight rooms, group exercise classes, personal training appointments, on-site fitness workshops, and special events.
  • Review and maintain program equipment for participant satisfaction and safety including periodic maintenance schedules, risk management inspections, equipment rotation, and scheduled replacement
  • Continue professional development by involvement in professional organizations, presenting at workshops and conferences, participating in regular continuing education
  • Assist other staff members with special events and programs as requested by the department

Student Development

  • Design, coordinate, and lead training opportunities that focus on the growth and development of student self-awareness, group fitness, leadership, wellness initiatives, and employability skill sets.
  • Actively engage in reflection of personal identity and how it influences work with students and colleagues, which includes professional development opportunities.
  • Teach CPR, AED, and First Aid classes for University Recreation Student Staff and App State community participants.
  • Develop and coordinate staff appreciation initiatives in order to retain student employees and build a sense of belonging within the team.

Fiscal Management

  • Budget, track, and reconcile all expenses related to the Fitness areas on a monthly basis.
  • Create a sustainable financial model by implementing innovative, authentic, and inclusive programming initiatives.
  • Assist in the annual budgeting process for the Fitness program. This includes developing, forecasting, and reporting on revenues and expenses related to Fitness areas. Total budgetary oversight is $152,000.

Risk Management

  • Provide oversight for risk management related to Fitness Programs, Group Exercise, Personal Training, and the Weight Rooms (Quinn Center, Student Recreation Center, Mt. Mitchell Fitness Center)
  • Monitor group fitness and personal training trends and recommend modifications to current programs, equipment, risk management policies, and operational procedures.

Facility and Equipment Management

  • Develop and implement effective and fiscally prudent procedures for the issuance, maintenance, and purchase of program equipment for Fitness programs.
  • Monitor and stay updated on Fitness industry national standards for facilities, and program equipment.
  • Manage the Fitness equipment in the Student Recreation Center, Quinn Center, and Mt. Mitchell Fitness Center.

At a minimum, you should have

  • Bachelor degree.
  • At least three (3) years of progressive professional experience in the design, implementation, and administration of fitness programs. A completed two-year Graduate Assistantship will be counted as one year of professional experience.
  • At least two (2) years of supervising staff experience in the area of fitness.
  • Demonstrated competency of active involvement working on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Group Fitness Instructor certification through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), American Council on Exercise (ACE), and/or Aerobics & Fitness Association of America (AFAA) AND/OR Certified Personal Trainer through American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), and/or American Council on Exercise (ACE).
  • American Red Cross CPR/FA/AED Instructor certification or ability to obtain within the first semester of employment.

The preferred candidate will have

  • Master degree.
  • Practical experience and understanding of Collegiate Recreational Fitness programs.
  • Hold two (2) or more current specialty group fitness certifications: ZUMBA, SPIN, Barre, TRX, Yoga, etc.
