General Purpose: Reporting to the Director of the RITM Center, the Associate Director will manage the full range of administrative, financial, fundraising, research, communication, educational and outreach activities of the Center. The Associate Director will support and help to develop the mission of the Center by cultivating a network of scholars, students, and leaders on and off campus, including programs for graduate fellows, faculty fellows, and visiting artists. The Associate Director will also play a key role in shaping the direction of a multi-university consortium of academic centers that work on topics related to race, and in the management of the grant funding that supports that consortium. This individual will be responsible for being an ambassador of the Center for internal and external academic constituencies in order to raise the academic profile and prestige of the Center.

  • Direct the planning and implementation of all aspects of the RITM Center’s programs and events.
  • Work with the art schools and museums, as well as with other Yale entities, to enrich ongoing programs and develop new programs.
  • Represent the Director on committees and at meetings and assume responsibility for functions in the Director’s absence.
  • Participate in the identification and selection of Fellows.
  • Help to organize and host talks, symposia, conferences, and similar events.
  • Supervise and manage office staff.
  • Manage budgets.
  • Direct the administration and supervision of fellowship programs.
  • Oversee management of the weekly newsletter, website development, and social media.
  • Work with Development on fundraising.

Required Education and Experience: Master’s degree or equivalent advanced degree and four years of experience in organizing and managing a wide range of activities, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated expertise working in all aspects of program management including ability to effectively manage financial and budgetary information and systems.
  • Knowledge or expertise in fields that contribute to the study of race, indigeneity, or transnational migration.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully communicate with constituents in both oral and written communications and strong attention to detail. Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Well-developed managerial and leadership skills. Strong organizational skills including planning and organizing. Ability to work well under pressure. Detail-oriented and resourceful with strong multitasking skills. Proactive and self-starting, exhibiting leadership and initiative. Demonstrated independent decision-making, problem solving and planning skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Drupal, and PowerPoint. Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and embrace emerging technology, new systems, concepts and processes. Proven ability to champion change and successfully guide others.
  • Preferred Education and Experience: Ph.D., Juris Doctor or another advanced degree in a relevant field, and experience working within an academic institution or non-profit organization. Specialization in an interdisciplinary field, and experience in teaching, strongly preferred. Yale University experience; knowledge of Yale University policies, procedures, and resources.
