Purchase College, SUNY — Design Media Instructional Support Associate

The School of Art+Design at Purchase College, SUNY, seeks candidates for a Design Media Instructional Support Associate (ISA) beginning August 2021. The ISA will be a participatory member of the Graphic Design Department working with faculty, staff, and students to maintain, define and integrate technology into the curriculum.

The successful candidate is organized, flexible, inquisitive, and reliable, and fluent in a range of technologies pertinent to 2D, 3D, and 4D processes. They will supervise computer classrooms, digital studios, and fabrication workrooms. The ISA will be well-versed in small scale print production, computer programs and techniques with a focus in contemporary graphic design. The candidate is a self-motivated individual who can set priorities and meet deadlines. They must possess excellent communication skills, interfacing daily with students and faculty from diverse backgrounds with varying levels of experience.

They will bring a curious, positive attitude, be engaged in their responsibilities, and be eager to share their knowledge with others. The ISA will work closely with students one-on-one, will teach technical workshops, and supervise student staff. The Associate advises students on production goals and may have additional curricular teaching opportunities. They conduct research and follow technological trends surrounding emerging technology, professional standards in design practice and education. They will have opportunities to expand their professional development research as part of the position.

This is an in-person position located in Purchase NY, commencing with the Fall 2021 semester. This is a unionized position ranked SUNY SL-2. Salary starts from $43,000 – $46,000 depending on experience, with contract-negotiated pay increases year over year and potential for permanency. Skills and Qualifications (minimum):

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft 365
  • Familiarity with Laser, Inkjet, and large-scale roll printing
  • Ability to use and learn software and hardware used in advanced digital media projects
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Collaborative and collegial; works well independently and as part of a team to further the Department’s strategic direction
  • Must have the ability to work well with diverse populations, and demonstrated cultural competence
  • Interested in a creative educational environment; experience in academia and/or design industry a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree in design, a related field, or equivalent professional experience in design, digital production, arts, or new media

Other Preferred Qualifications (possess some/all):

  • Instructional or teaching experience
  • Working knowledge of media technologies and equipment including 2D, 3D printing, laser cutter, vinyl cutter, CNC, embroidery machine, or other professional design equipment.
  • Experience or interest with virtual, web, 3D modeling, and time-based software.
  • Interest or experience working in analog technologies (Letterpress, Risograph and Offset Printing)
  • Three or more years of related production and technical support experience, and/or experience in a professional arts school setting in higher education.
  • MFA or equivalent professional experience in digital production, arts, or a related field.
