Job Summary
Columbus State University is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Director, Student Life & Development. Under the supervision of the Director of Student Life & Development, this position is responsible for the planning and successful implementation of a comprehensive Orientation program, ROAR. The Assistant Director is the primary representative for the Division of Student Affairs in a highly collaborative and innovative partnership with the Center for Experiential Learning and Career Design focused upon planning, delivering, and assessing a transformative two-day orientation experience for new first-year students, ROAR/ROAR+. The Assistant Director also provides vision, leadership and administrative oversight of the Parent & Family program; Student Organizations and Student Government Association; Fraternity & Sorority Life, and office or campus initiatives. This position will directly advise various teams of student leaders, and work with various campus stakeholders to ensure the successful execution of campus-wide initiatives. The Assistant Director will directly supervise one professional staff member whose oversight of programmatic areas includes Fraternity & Sorority Life

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Planning and implementing a rigorous and engaging new student Orientation programs that encompass the diverse make-up of the student body (i.e. first-year, non-traditional, online, transfer etc.).
    • This position is responsible for all aspects of implementing a comprehensive orientation program including, but not limited to, communication, registration, assessment, and planning.
    • Continually research national and regional best practices related to the development, implementation, and assessment of Orientation programs.
    • Manage a highly organized Orientation Team comprised of selected students through proactive and engaging training programs, team-building exercises, retreat, and leadership coursework. Training for the Orientation Team should focus on building cohesiveness among the members as well as professional leadership in partnership with the Center for Experiential Learning and Career Design and the Center for Servant Leadership. Create a professional, energetic environment that encourages future recruitment of new student leaders.
    • The Assistant Director actively works in concert with our partners within the Center for Experiential Learning and Career Design on the continuing transformation and enhancement of the Orientation experience, ROAR/ROAR+ for new first-year students through collaboration on planning, orientation team training, scheduling, communication, coordination, and other activities.
  • Manage a Parent & Family Program that encompasses interaction with parents, the Parent Connection (newsletter), Parent & Family Days, and any additional events or related programs to provide information and connection for parents and families on campus.
  • Serve as the advisor for campus Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) and the Student Government Association (SGA) by providing resources, direction, training, policy oversight and assistance.
    • Provide training and leadership to registered student organizations and campus advisors; track and maintain registered student organizations. Maintain and oversee the online student organization management portal, CSUInvolve; maintain scanning and attendance tracking technology. Oversee the SGA President's Council.
    • Collaborate with the Dean of Students office to pursue and implement the AASCU American Democracy Project membership in partnership with SGA.
  • Assist the Director of Student Life & Development with departmental administrative components to include, but not limited to departmental assessment initiatives, supervision and training of all professional and paraprofessional staff members, and contribute to the CSU Momentum initiatives.
  • Collaborate with all aspects of various programmatic areas (e.g. Diversity, Leadership, Student Activities, Fraternity & Sorority Life, etc.). Serve on appropriate university committees and governing boards. Work closely with students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders to collaborate on programmatic initiatives designed to capture the college student experience and completes other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Educational Policy, or other closely related field with at least 3 years of applicable experience; evidence of increasing levels of responsibility in both supervisory and budgetary management experiences.
  • Extensive display of understanding college student development, student development theoretical frameworks, college student personnel, organizational structure in higher education and facilities management.
  • Experience working closely with students from diverse backgrounds within higher education settings.
  • Extensive experience initiating, planning, implementing, and evaluating episodic and ongoing programmatic efforts.
  • Experience developing and implementing strategic planning and outcome-driven assessment efforts.
  • Experience working collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders in a wide variety of university initiatives and committees.
  • Experience in developing and implement student-driven programmatic efforts.
  • Ability to plan, develop, and implement programs and activities related to orientation initiatives in conjunction with campus stakeholders, administration, faculty and staff.
  • Ability to effectively research other university best practices for successful, interactive, and energetic programs.
  • Maintain a sound understanding of university, state-wide, or institutional policies and procedures and best business practices.
  • Ability to successfully lead a team of student leaders through training, mentorship, and position oversight.
  • Proficient verbal and non-verbal communicator, who can articulate and write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational and communication skills and display a strong ability to multitask.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be a team player who is willing to communicate openly, follow policies and procedures, and commit to campus-wide mission and goals.
  • Ability to manage and maintain budget and fiscal responsibilities.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, disseminate and report data as well as provide current and future trends regarding student development.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from internal and external stakeholders and constituencies.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate other duties as assigned.

Proposed Salary
The annualized salary range for this position is $43,698 – $48,000 and includes full benefits.
