As part of the LAS Academic Affairs team, the Director of Career Development provides leadership for programs and advising that advance students’ career readiness. The incumbent offers courses, trainings, and related activities to promote students’ intentional design and engagement for successful career development through their Illinois experience. The incumbent provides training programs for life-career design coaching and collaborates with others in offering employer, community partner and related career-shaping events. The incumbent shares in LAS Academic Affairs’ common mission to support a diverse student body in their academic, personal and professional success.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leads college-level initiatives to advance students’ career development and experience
  • Creates, implements and assesses a strategic plan to advance students’ career development from their transition to campus to their first step post-graduation
  • Leads collaboration of units’ career services staff across the college
  • Liaises and collaborates with career services across and off-campus, including The Career Center, LAS corporate engagement efforts, Illini Success, Discovery Partners Institute (DPI), the Big10 Academic Alliance career initiative
  • Collaborates with partners like DPI and LAS units to create and implement curricula-integrated internship experiences
  • Collaborates in LAS Life + Career Design (LCD) initiative
  • Collaborates in ongoing development of LAS’ Life + Career Design initiative
  • Co-creates advisor-coach-intern training programs focused on empowering students for academic, personal and professional success, specifically leads the training to support students’ professional success within LCD
  • Teaches/supervises the teaching of a sophomore- (2-credit) and a junior-senior (1-credit) course in which students practice Human-Centered Design (HCD) to create their own, customized maps for life-long learning and career development
  • Offers/supervises the offering of career readiness workshops and courses that support an internship or similar community engagement experience to maximize professional development/career readiness during experience
  • Leads administration of LAS Life + Career Design scholarships that support career development experiences, such as internships, UG research, community service
  • Recruits and supervises 1-3 graduate assistants or academic hourlies and 5 undergraduate interns to assist in career development and related experiential activities, providing professional training as part of the internship experience.
  • Participates in the shared responsibilities within LAS Student Academic Affairs, including walk-in advising, academic progress review, planning for and assessment of office impact, and LAS student recruitment-orientation.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:
Master’s Degree. Minimum three years’ work experience in career development or services in higher education or in a professional organization; Effective initiative, leadership and collaboration skills as demonstrated through previous experiences.

Preferred:
Master’s degree in a relevant field of study that enhances the individual’s ability to assist Liberal Arts and Sciences students in designing and implementing a plan for career development. Five years’ work experience in career development, including creating materials and/or experiences that emphasize developmental pathways; Knowledge of and/or experience in using human-centered design for life and career mapping; Experience designing and teaching courses that are learning outcomes-driven and advance students’ career exploration and development; Experience offering courses or similar experiential education for students in service/employment/internship opportunities to help advance their career readiness; Experience setting up and supporting internship or professionalized community service opportunities within a liberal arts education mindset; Experience training/working with faculty, academic advisors and career services staff to create experiences that advance students’ career mapping, readiness and experience.

Successful candidates will have the following: Demonstrated ability to track and assess programming impact; Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; A commitment to co-creating inclusive communities and other intercultural skills development as required to be effective in a diverse community and workforce; Graduate studies or similar demonstrated interest in issues in undergraduate education and development; Knowledge of career development field within higher education, specifically at the undergraduate level.

SALARY AND APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

This is a full-time academic professional position appointed on a 12 month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
