Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine — Director of Pharmacology Education

General Summary / Purpose:
The Director for Pharmacology Education (Academic Program Manager) will lead the MS in Pharmacology Program accreditation efforts, develop Program curricula, coordinate participating instructors and prepare for the initial cohort of students. The position will be a full-time staff position. Once the Program is established, the Director will be the strategic and operational leader for the Program (whether in-person, on-line, or hybrid), responsible for ongoing program organization, administration, fiscal management, continuous quality review, analysis, and improvement.

The Program resides within the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences, and the Director reports to the Director of the Department. The Director will work collaboratively with other members of the Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences and the Office of the Vice Dean for Education and associated academic program directors and other multidisciplinary faculty and staff throughout the Johns Hopkins enterprise to continually evaluate, improve and deliver the curriculum with innovative and high-quality graduate education methods consistent with the mission, values, and strategic goals of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Johns Hopkins University. The Director will ultimately supervise a Program Administrator and other dedicated Program staff.

Continued employment contingent on successful Program approval by the Maryland Higher Education Council (MHEC). 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Lead the creation of a new MS in Pharmacology program and collaborate with Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences faculty to design the curriculum.
  • Interact with faculty and University officials to establish and implement policies and procedures to facilitate excellence and equity within the academic program and admissions process.
  • Oversee the establishment and implementation of all policies and procedures related to the operations and fiscal management of the Program. Ensure that all established policies and procedures comply with all professional, state, and federal rules and regulations and that the highest level of services are offered to every student in a cost-effective and responsible manner.
  • Administer the day-to-day operations of the Program and, under the professional guidance of the Director of Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences, be responsible for all Program administrative decisions.
  • Monitor, analyze, and identify potential problems or issues facing the operation of the Program.
  • Manage multiple programs within the unit to include: student recruitment; student advisement; Program admissions; and program accreditation (includes implementation and compliance).
  • Collaborate and coordinate with the Office of Vice Dean of Education, including the Office of Online Education, and Director of the Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences to identify educators to ensure coverage for all courses in the program. Orient hired faculty to the program, evaluate teaching performance and mentor faculty in teaching.
  • Provide oversight to adjunct faculty, including the monitoring of course content and evaluation.
  • Collaborate with Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences faculty to enhance graduate level pharmacology educational content in the department. 
  • Lead special projects and teach courses that are consistent with the Director’s area(s) of expertise.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.

We seek an education-focused individual with a strong background in pharmacology and terminal academic doctorate in a discipline appropriate for teaching responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s or Ph.D. in education or specific field related to program (PharmD, Ph.D., Ed.D., etc.).  5 years experience in all aspects of academic program administration. 

Additional experience may substitute for required education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications:
Supervisory experience preferred.

1 year experience with online education highly desired.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Previous demonstrated expertise with graduate education programs and knowledge of university programs. 
  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. 
  • Significant experience in management of other professionals. 
  • Track record of scholarly activity or project development, implementation and outcome assessment. 
  • Content expertise in pharmacology.
  • Commitment to fostering leadership and scholarship in the area of pharmacology education.
