Job Description
The Senior Associate Director of Undergraduate Admissions is part of the leadership team of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Vanderbilt University and is a key individual contributor responsible for leading the efforts to recruit, evaluate the applications of, and select new members of the undergraduate schools of the university.

The Senior Associate Director will lead Organization Culture & Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, working closely with both internal staff and external partners. This position will join a leadership team reporting to the Director of Undergraduate Admissions, and including individuals charged with leading the various functions of the office: Evaluation & Selection, Marketing & Communications, Operations, Recruitment & Outreach, and Visitor Experience & Strategy. Additionally, this position may interview applicants, exercise independent judgement in contributing to admissions decisions, contribute to on-campus and virtual programs, and will assist with recruitment programs. This role is jointly responsible for ensuring that all admissions applications and supplemental materials are evaluated, reviewed and decisioned as accurately and efficiently as possible.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Vanderbilt University is a critical unit within University Enrollment Affairs that contributes greatly to the entire Vanderbilt community. Its mission is to recruit, select, and enroll a diverse cohort of degree-seeking first-year and transfer students who are intellectually curious, academically talented, and socially engaged. The Office consists of a team that includes the Director, an experienced group of admissions officers, and a well-seasoned support staff engaged in marketing Vanderbilt globally. To accomplish this, members of the OUA team travel both domestically and abroad to conduct high school visits, attend college fairs, and do speaking engagements. The Office communicates systematically with hundreds of thousands of prospective students through traditional printed publications, the web, and other social media channels, and serves as the first point of contact for members of the public interested in VU.

Duties and Responsibilities
Assist the Evaluation & Selection, Recruitment & Outreach, Visitor Experience & Strategy, Marketing & Communications and Operations efforts of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. May include the following:

  • Reviewing application materials in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Meet with or present information sessions to prospective students and applicants as assigned.
  • Participate in and serve as an active and voting member of the admissions committee. May chair committee in absence of Director or Dean
  • Travel for recruitment purposes, including participation in forums, high school visits, college fair and career day programs as assigned.
  • Assist in the development of brochures and advertisements as well as outreach strategies as assigned.
  • Assist in the development of other recruitment initiatives such as mailings, social media campaigns, presentations, conferences, etc. as assigned.
  • Assist with developing recruitment plans for meeting enrollment goals.
  • Support the work of lead event programmers signed to impact recruitment/yield efforts (i.e.,PreVU, Black & Gold Days, Counselor Conference, Anchor Days, daily information sessions, VirtualVU sessions, etc.

Lead effective multi-year Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives with internal staff and university partners to further the goals of DEI

  • Act as a DEI subject matter specialist by contributing perspective, insights, and knowledge, enabling the office to achieve measurable results.
  • Provide DEI coaching to the work unit to create opportunities for diversity in recruitment, learning, and engagement.
  • Attend to organizational culture concerns, including hiring, onboarding, training, offboarding and continuing professional development of admissions staff members.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Relationships
This position has supervisory responsibilities. Supervisees could include admissions officers, specialist employees, administrative assistants, and/or student or volunteer groups which support the work of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions 


  • Bachelor’s degree is necessary,
  • Master’s degree is strongly preferred.
  • A valid drivers license is necessary.
  • At least 7 years of progressively responsible admissions office experience is necessary.
  • As a salaried (exempt) position, ability to work weekends and nights is necessary, especially in key times of the recruitment cycle.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills are necessary.
  • The ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community is necessary.
  • Effective verbal and writing skills are necessary.
  • Strong public speaking skills, with comfort in front of audiences of 150+, are necessary.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information is necessary.
  • Ability to travel independently up to 6+ weeks per year is necessary.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures is necessary.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems is necessary.
  • Conflict resolution and/or mediation skills are necessary.
  • Skill in the use of the Slate CRM, word processing, spreadsheet, and/or presentation software is preferred.
  • Organizing and coordinating skills are preferred.
