Salary Range: $46,000 – 54,000 /year

The Teaching + Learning Commons (the Commons) is the campus-wide innovative infrastructure for comprehensive faculty and student support. It is the executive branch of the EVC for advancing teaching excellence and student success.

Part of the Commons’ Experiential Learning Hub, The Academic Internship Program (AIP) facilitates student engagement in structured academic internships that bridge theory and practice via opportunities for students to apply their academic foundation to ‘real world’ settings and problems. Through the support and coordination of credit-bearing experiential learning programs structured to incorporate a cycle of applied activity and reflection, AIP facilitates community engagement, career exploration and development, and the development of experience and competencies critical to success at and beyond the University.

Reporting to the Director of the Academic Internship Program (AIP), the Internship Counselor coordinates academic internships for undergraduate students that create opportunities for academic and career learning and development. Assists science and engineering students with identifying and obtaining internships, establishing learning objectives, and effectively articulating their goals and relevant skill sets. Advises students on program and University procedures and policies related to participation and enrollment in academic internships. Builds and maintains professional relationships with local organizations in relevant industries to develop experiential learning opportunities for students. Evaluates internship descriptions for adherence to program and Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA) guidelines. Serves as liaison to assigned academic departments and campus units, and participates in AIP’s outreach, assessment, and program development efforts.

The Internship Coordinator is responsible for coordination, advising, and ongoing development and outreach for one or more of AIP’s special programs and partnerships, including the Biology Research Internship Program. Helps mediate conflicts which may arise during students’ tenure, and facilitates reflection to increase the effectiveness of learning.

  • Bachelor’s degree and one to three (1 – 3) years of related experience in a higher education setting, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Competency in applying the principles and theories of counseling/advising with a diverse range of undergraduate students. Ability to quickly assess students’ educational and career-related needs and provide useful responses and advice.
  • Multicultural competencies; knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate programs under minimal supervision and collaborate with a wide range of academic, administrative and student affairs departments.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Ability to anticipate, identify and analyze problems and recommend solutions.
  • Ability to coordinate and implement student recruitment and program outreach efforts.
  • Thorough knowledge of learning theories and training models. Knowledge of experiential learning models and practices.
  • Knowledge of the professional and personal requirements of a wide range of careers as well as public and private sector organizations that recruit interns.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to establish goals and prioritize workload; ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects and timelines.
