Job Description:
The Research Technology Manager leads the Research Technology Services (RTS) group within the Information Technology Services (ITS) department. The Manager works closely with the University’s research community and advocates for current and future technology needs. This position is responsible for delivering analytical and computational IT solutions to the academic and research community along with supporting the research IT lifecycle to provide sophisticated computational resources.

  • Provide leadership in the development and ongoing management of information technology service in support of researchers and the University’s research enterprise
  • Foster and maintain communication with researchers of the university regarding service planning and delivery
  • Supervise ITS Research Facilitator(s)
  • Oversee service delivery teams that include staff from multiple ITS units
  • Manage research administration systems/applications development
  • Oversee research application hosting
  • Implement managed scientific computing environments
  • Provide subject matter expertise for developing advanced data analytics/statistics, visualization, and computational technologies for a range of applications in both academic and research settings
  • Strengthen algorithms and software development to create computing approaches for large data sets
  • Support the development of the skills and careers of contemporary data scientists and research scientists
  • Understand industry trends, develop a professional development plan, and regularly share knowledge with ITS stakeholders
  • Maintain the security posture for assigned systems and applications in accordance with ITS policies, procedures and practices, and industry best practices
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of systems standards
  • Lead and manage research collaboration support through established advisory committees and workgroups
  • Manage and organize research storage
  • Provide research Linux support
  • Manage source control via Gitlab
  • Provide user education for research provided services
  • Oversee specialized desktop support for research lab workstations
  • Be available to provide scheduled support and consultation outside normal business hours, including occasional evenings, holidays, or weekends, within reasonable professional obligation and expectation

Minimum Qualifications

  • M.S. degree from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Information Systems Management Information Systems, Quantitative Social Sciences, or related field
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a related role
  • Experience in statistical/mathematical programming (MATLAB, R, SAS, Stata, Scala, Python + Pandas)
  • Experience in statistics, mathematical modeling, probability, and data visualization
  • Experience with basic web-delivered data visualization applications (Java, JavaScript, Shiny, Bokeh, Folium)
  • Experience instructing data-related skills and tools with application in various disciplines
  • Familiarity with fundamentals of data management, preservation, and reproducibility
  • Familiarity with textual information as structured data, e.g., XML
  • Applicants must address in their application or during the interview their ability to work with a culturally diverse population.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A minimum of two years of supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of both relational and non-relational databases and Hadoop-based frameworks
  • A deep understanding of statistical hypothesis testing and experimental design, data visualization techniques and tools (i.e., Matplotlib, Bokeh, etc.), and manipulation of large data sets
  • Academic or professional experience using quantitative methodologies
  • Knowledge of public and proprietary sources of national and global data
  • Knowledge of geospatial data and technologies
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in facilitating user-based software applications that enable research or instructional activities (e.g., statistical software such as R, Python or commercial software products, and associated data visualization technologies such as GGPlot, GoogleVis, Shiny, Plotly, D3)

Additional Information:
Professional Rank and Salary Range: Associate for University Systems Analysis, SL-5; $105,000-$115,000
