Macalester College — Executive Director, Hamre Center for Health & Wellness

Macalester College seeks to hire an Executive Director for the Hamre Center for Health & Wellness (Hamre Center). The Executive Director is responsible for the vision, leadership, budgetary, and administrative oversight of the Hamre Center, centering social justice, access, anti-racism and equity. The Hamre Center is an integrated student health center including medical, counseling, disability services, health promotion (including AOD), and sexual violence prevention education alongside student health insurance policy development, selection and implementation. The Executive Director will be responsible for reimagining how disability services will integrate into the Hamre Center to facilitate access and equity for students who identify as disabled and promote universal design approaches. The Executive Director serves as the lead campus resource providing guidance and direction in the College’s efforts to prioritize health, wellbeing, and campus accessibility as a foundation for lifelong success and resilience while delivering quality service that meets the evolving needs of our student population.

Responsibilities

  • Provide vision, strategic planning, leadership and budget oversight for the Hamre Center to advance the college and divisional mission, centering social justice, access, anti-racism, and equity.
  • Lead Hamre Center efforts in implementing social and environmental strategies that enhance student health and well-being at the community level. Serve as the primary voice of the college on health and wellbeing. Providing guidance to various constituents relating to topics/concerns that affect student health decisions.
  • Directly supervise 5 professional staff members who serve as directors and operations manager of the Hamre Center (Medical Director, Director of Counseling, Director of Health Promotion and Sexual Respect, Director of Disability Services, Operations Manager). Additionally, indirectly supervise approximately 23 staff members who report to the aforementioned directors and operations manager, as well as various seasonal and contracted professionals, graduate interns, student staff and volunteers.
  • Lead staff professional development initiatives; oversight and completion of staff performance evaluations; participate in and supervise human resources decisions including recruitment, hiring, training and retention of personnel.
  • Develop strategies for primary prevention, harm-reduction, intervention and postvention of student health concerns (physical, behavioral, psychological) and a shared responsibility of student well-being across the campus community
  • Prepare for and respond to public health emergencies. Participate in planning for and coordinating campus responses and providing as needed support to students in the event of public health and/or campus emergency/crisis.
  • Manage and ensure that all necessary compliance metrics are reached and maintained. Staying well-informed of practice standards set by ACHA, IACS, and other organizations relevant to the practice of college health and ensuring that current Hamre Center practices are aligned with industry standards

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in public health, healthcare administration, higher education, social work, psychology, business, health care provider, mental health/counseling, or related field. No licensing required for this position.
  • Five or more years of administrative/management experience, preferably in a college health, college counseling, or college wellbeing environment.
  • Five or more years supervisory experience, preferably of a multidisciplinary staff. Experience in operational and strategic planning, fiscal operations/budgeting, and personnel management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • An understanding of the diverse health and wellbeing issues facing college students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to developing health and counseling initiatives to meet the needs of a diverse student population as well as a commitment to supporting historically under-served populations. Firm understanding of HIPAA, FERPA, The Clery Act, Title IX, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

Additionally, preferred candidates will have the following:

  • Relevant experience in the public health field. Knowledge of issues, trends and best practice standards associated with primary health care, health promotion (including AOD), disability services, and sexual violence prevention.
  • Some administrative experience in a higher education/college health environment.
  • Experience in assessment tools and strategies to enhance services and make decisions
  • Experience managing acute public health issues, such as infectious disease outbreaks, drug addiction/abuse, and increasing mental health crises.
  • An understanding of the residential liberal arts college environment.
