Position Description

Under the general direction of the Senior Associate Dean of Educational Operations, the Faculty Development Director oversees the Faculty Center of Excellence and directs all faculty development activities.

Essential Functions

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the formulation of strategic faculty development planning to promote faculty success in teaching and learning, scholarship and faculty productivity. 
  • Leads the integrated implementation and evaluation of faculty development initiatives and on-going activities for faculty development.
  • Provides a continuous professional development model for faculty as learners.  
  • In collaboration with the Senior Associate Dean of Educational Operations and key senior leadership stakeholders, performs a yearly assessment of faculty development needs.
  • In response to the yearly assessment, designs, schedules, and implements annual faculty development offerings to include webinars, live events, and certificate programs, across the university's education, clinical and research domains. 
  • Develops the university's integrated strategic faculty development planning process, to include short- and long-term strategic plan development, review, approval, implementation and evaluation.
  • Creates and Chairs a Faculty Development Stakeholder Committee to include key senior leaders to help guide faculty development needs.
  • Routinely queries the faculty through surveys and focus groups regarding their interest and feedback on faculty development programming. 
  • Oversees the University's newly created Faculty Center of Excellence ensuring that all faculty development resources are readily communicated and available to all faculty. 
  • Designs and runs the twice-yearly Faculty Onboarding and Orientation events for newly appointed faculty.
  • Partners with the Medical Education Office of Assessment to glean information to inform the yearly faculty development plan.
  • Develops an ongoing campaign to heighten awareness of faculty development offerings to all CUSM faculty.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
  • Competence in learning delivery methodologies
  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze, summarize, and effectively present data.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Strong analytical, evaluative, and objective critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of pedagogical learning theories.
  • Knowledge of team building principles and techniques.

Education and Experience

  • Undergraduate Degree required.   Master's degree in Education, formal training in Instructional Design, or personal teaching experience strongly preferred.   Doctoral Degree (Ed.D. , PhD or other) optional
  • 7 to 10 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Experience in higher education required with School of Medicine or Health Sciences experience strongly preferred.
