Job Summary:
The Community Engagement Coordinator position within the Office of Social Change and Intercultural Engagement, provides campus leadership in the creation, implementation, and assessment of co-curricular community engagement programs that examine intersectionality of identities, perspectives and experiences, and for student leadership development through active citizenship and social responsibility.  The Coordinator advises student organizations focused on service, community engagement, and philanthropy.  This position will help coordinate and work on campus-wide initiatives such as the partnership with Residence Life (place-based community engagement program Engage Dallas) and Dream Week programming.

Essential Functions:
Coordinate campus-wide Community Engagement programs by promoting, tracking, and assessment student community engagement initiatives; developing relationships with local, regional, and national agencies to establish direct service opportunities for individuals and groups of students that address community-identified needs and engage students in education on social issues through Engage Dallas.

Service Trips – Serve as the co advisor to the SMU Alternative Breaks program. Oversee students in the development and implementation of service break trips. Advise the Executive Board and Site Leaders in the planning and implementation of activities. Oversee the fiscal and risk management procedures. Assist students in training and development through retreats and meetings.

Partnerships – Collaborate with various campus wide Student Affairs, Academic, Development and Alumni offices in the coordination of community engagement programs that support the comprehensive student experience including, but not limited to, days of service, service trips, co-curricular projects, and internships.

Teamwork – Serve as an engaged member of the SCIE team, assisting in the implementation of programs and initiatives as well as attending staff meetings, retreats and professional development opportunities. Support the implementation and realization of the goals and learning domains in the Student Affairs strategic plan.

Social Change Programming – Coordinate campus wide programs, which may include, but are not limited to Dream Week (commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.), Civic Engagement Initiatives, and other campus presentations.

Supervision – Lead the hiring, training, and supervision of student community engagement project coordinators and graduate assistant(s) for community engagement programs.

Primary Advisement – Advisor to Mustang Heroes. Oversee students in the development and implementation of service projects.

Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree is required.   Master’s degree is preferred.  Prefer field of study in Student Affairs Administration, Student Development, or Counseling.

Two years’ experience in a college or university environment working with diverse populations is required (Graduate level experience will be considered).

Experience advising students and/or student groups is required.

Understanding of college student leadership and identity development and organizational/group dynamics is required. 

Experience managing large-scale, complex events is required.

Experience working with Alternative Breaks programs or students in the areas of community engagement, service learning, diversity and inclusion, volunteerism and/or leadership training is strongly preferred.

Knowledge of Social Change Model of Leadership Development, Active Citizen Continuum, and student identity development theories is required.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office is required.  Adobe Creative Suite skills strongly preferred.

Professional experience utilizing social media for student programs is required.

Candidate must have outstanding verbal and written communication skills with the ability to build relationships with a wide range of constituencies.

Must have excellent interpersonal skills.  Must be able to develop strong, professional advising relationships with individuals and groups of students.

Must have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.

Candidate must have well developed project management skills that include the ability to handle multiple projects.

Must have excellent customer service orientation.

Candidate must have strong analytical and problem solving skills.

Must be strongly focused on details including appropriate handling of procurement card and purchasing responsibilities.

Candidate must be willing and able to work occasional evening and weekends for student leadership meetings or retreats. 

Must be willing and able to travel occasionally for retreats and/or participation in Alternative Break trips, when university travel resumes.
