Job Summary:
The Student Affairs Associate Director (AD) for Student Center & Activities (SCA) provides strategic leadership and oversees the daily operations of the Hughes Trigg Student Center (HTSC) within the Department of Student Involvement.  The Associate Director is responsible for revenue generation, reservation management, assessment, marketing/communication, and building collaborative relationships with stakeholders.  The Associate Director supervises one professional staff member, is a leader within the Student Involvement team, and works in service of the departmental mission and Student Affairs divisional strategic plan.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage operations and daily function of the student center including facilities management, budget, assessment, marketing, and reporting.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate professional staff members in the Student Center & Activities.  Encourage and support their development in order to forge a cohesive culture within SCA in support of student and facility success.
  • Serve as salesperson for Center and generate revenue in support of operations. Manage HTSC related budgets including development of model for revenue generation, forecasting, and planning for future renovation projects.
  • Develop marketing and communication strategies for Hughes Trigg Student Center (for both internal and external stakeholders) using web, social, print, and other digital communications.  Ensure the division and SMU brands are appropriately represented and implemented for marketing assets. Develop and maintain dynamic web presence for HTSC.
  • Serve as an active and engaged member of the Student Involvement team and support the office mission. Support the implementation and realization of the goals and learning domains in the student affairs strategic plan. In the absence of the Executive Director of Student Involvement, serve as their representative at meetings, functions, and activities.
  • Establish and advise a HTSC student advisory board.
  • Manage project requests for facilities related items not resolved via work order.
  • Develop strategic plan for maintenance of investment in recent facility renovation including furniture and equipment.
  • Support and encourage adoption of Connect.SMU and Planon by the SMU community. Advise students as needed.  Other duties as required.


Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree is required.  Field of study for degree in higher education, student affairs, event management and planning or related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of three years’ full-time experience is required, preferably in student center operations or convention-style facility management.
  • Knowledge of budget management, project management, college students, and program development is essential.
  • Experience working with diverse populations is preferred.
  • Microsoft Office Suite is strongly preferred.  Experience with Campus Labs Engage and/or Planon is preferred.

  • Candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to develop marketing and communication strategies.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills.  Must be able to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Candidate must have excellent organizational skills that include strategic and operational planning, project management and program development.
  • Candidate must have strong problem solving skills with the ability to develop creative solutions.
  • Must be detail oriented, able to forecast, develop and manage budgets.
  • Candidate should have excellent decision-making and leadership skills, able to effectively develop staff.
  • Must be willing and able to work after traditional business hours on weekdays and occasionally on weekends.  Responsiveness is critical and necessary, and could be evening and weekend timeframes given the responsibilities of the position.
