Summary:
Herron School of Art + Design invites applications for a one-year visiting appointment as a Lecturer in Visual Communication Design. At Herron, lecturer positions are teaching-intensive, making them an ideal position for someone who is wanting to work closely with students or hone their skills as an educator. We seek candidates with a record of excellent creative or professional practice, innovative pedagogy, and relevant teaching experience in visual communication design. Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in and capacity for delivering courses in both VCD and the foundations undergraduate programs. Candidates should also be open to collaborating with faculty in the areas of Drawing & Illustration, Photography, or Printmaking to explore new educational opportunities for our students.

Responsibilities:
This teaching position entails instructing, coaching, and preparing students studying visual communication design and working with faculty across the department and school to deliver and improve upon our course offerings. This faculty position will entail a 4-4 course load. Teaching might entail a combination of on-the-ground, hybrid, and online platforms. The position is for one year with the possibility of renewal. 

In addition to teaching four classes per semester (or the equivalent), the position requires the successful applicant to plan and administer courses and programs in conjunction with the faculty and administration. Additional service to the school and university may also be required. 

Visual Communication Design Responsibilities: 

  • Teach using professional tools and demonstrate proficiency and/or professional experience in some combination of following possible areas: typography, publication design, UI/UX, infographic design, design research methods, visual culture, design foundations, or design history.
  • Minor service activity including department and school faculty meetings.
  • Research and professional creative activity are not required for this position, but candidates are encouraged to maintain those efforts where possible.

Qualification Requirements: 

  • We seek candidates who are actively addressing critical discourse of contemporary art and/or design in their professional practice.  
  • A master’s degree (MFA, MDes or equivalent) in Visual Communication Design or a related design discipline is required.  
  • Evidence of successful teaching at the college level.
  • A commitment to community and socially engaged practices.
  • The qualified applicant should demonstrate understanding of the role of professional creatives and designers in describing and responding to audiences and contexts that design solutions must address. 
  • A creative approach that includes recognition of the physical, cognitive, cultural, and social human factors that shape art and design decisions is required.  
  • The qualified applicant must demonstrate expert skill in the manipulation of typography and imagery as a means to clarify, energize and humanize communication in contexts where audience needs are prioritized.  
  • Experience working in collaborative, cross-disciplinary teams is desired.
