A Quartet of Black Faculty Members Taking on New Assignments in Higher Education

Tracey Osbourne, Management of Complex Systems Professor and University of California Presidential Chair at the University of California, Merced, has been appointed director of the Center for Climate Justice. The center is a system-wide initiative at the University of California to address climate change as a social justice and equity issue.

Dr. Osbourne is a graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Florida and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.

Alan Tita has been named associate dean for Global and Women’s Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. Dr. Tita currently serves as the John C. Hauth, M.D., Endowed Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, senior vice-chair for research and innovation, and director of the university-wide interdisciplinary Center for Women’s Reproductive Health.

Dr. Tita received his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in Cameroon. He holds a master of public health degree from the University of Leeds in England and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas Health Science Center School in Houston.

Dave D. Weatherspoon, professor of agricultural, food, and resource economics and associate dean in the Office of the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education at Michigan State University, is taking on the added duties of assistant provost for academic strategic planning. Dr. Weatherspoon joined the faculty at Michigan State in 1988.

Professor Weatherspoon earned a bachelor’s degree in crop and soil science from Michigan State University. He holds a master’s degree in agricultural economics from Pennsylvania State University and a Ph.D. in food and resource economics from the University of Florida.

Felicia Griffin-Fennell has been appointed as the first full-time director of the Academic Fellows Program in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. This includes a faculty appointment in the department of sociology at the university. She has been serving as the founding director of the STEM Starter Academy in Springfield Technical Community College in Massachusetts.

Dr. Griffin-Fennell holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Connecticut.

In Memoriam: Faith Ringgold, 1930-2024

Ringgold was a mixed media artist, best known for her narrative quilts which centered around African American and women's representation. She was a professor emerita of art with the University of California, San Diego where she taught for 15 years.
