Be a part of the University of Baltimore School of Law’s Law Career Development Office (LCDO) team to provide career development programming and to counsel and coach students and alumni in career planning, professional and talent development, job search strategies, resume preparation, interviewing skills, and networking in the diverse legal market and other professional career paths. Responsibilities include overseeing the Judicial Clerkship programming, including our Judicial EXPLOR (Experience in Legal Organizations) program, which places 1L students in summer internships with judges, and requires the development and management of critical employer relationships within the Maryland Judiciary. Responsibilities also include overseeing the LCDO’s diversity and inclusion programming, as well as supporting students seeking diversity-based opportunities, including fellowships and scholarships offered by various employers and bar associations and through diversity job fairs.

Key Responsibilities

Judicial clerkship and internship programming

  • Manage the judicial clerkship and internship programming, including Judicial EXPLOR, the 1L summer internship placement program.
  • Develop and manage the LCDO’s employer relations and placement options with the Maryland and federal judiciary.
  • Maintain up-to-date database of placements and positions.
  • Coordinate panels and career development programming centered around judicial clerkships and internships.
  • Assist students in identifying and securing judicial clerkships and internships.
  • Prepare and update materials to support students in the application process for judicial clerkships and internships.
  • Maintain employment data on judicial internships and clerkships.

Student support

  • Counsel students and alumni on a daily basis.
  • Work with students on professional development including interviewing skills, job search strategies, application materials, etc.
  • Respond to employer and student inquiries.
  • Review resumes and cover letters.
  • Conduct mock interviews.
  • Present trainings and programming for students.
  • Facilitate networking opportunities for students, by identifying and attending with students bar functions, meetings, and other networking events.
  • Model and teach professionalism in the work place; work with student organizations and demonstrate and facilitate student leadership in event planning and employer relations.

Oversee and manage diversity programming

  • Develop and manage the LCDO’s relations with employers offering diversity-based opportunities and programming.
  • Monitor and provide content regarding the LCDO’s diversity programming webpage.
  • Advertise diversity programming and opportunities to students.
  • Assist and counsel students in the application process, including diversity statements, resumes, cover letters and mock interviews.
  • Work with student affinity groups on career development programming and opportunities.

Statistics and reporting

  • Assist with the collection and analysis of employment statistics.
  • Assist compiling reports.
  • Utilize computer database for employment reporting and information gathering.

LCDO general programming

  • Support LCDO programs, career fairs, and career development initiatives in broad range of areas.
  • Assist in response to inquiries that come in to the LCDO via email, phone, walk-in appointments.
  • Assist in the management and creation of social media content.
  • Draft content for the LCDO Weekly Record and other communications with students.
  • Collaborate with other LCDO staff members to plan and coordinate events, including the annual Judicial Reception.

Required Education and Experience

Education: Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA accredited law school
Experience: Five years or more in the practice of law or related professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of career development and placement strategies in the legal field, related industries or in an institution of higher education. Prior experience as a judicial law clerk is a plus

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with the legal job market is preferred, as is previous experience in marketing, recruiting, and presentation and speaking skills.
  • Proficiency in all applications of the Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PowerPoint and Word), and experience with databases and online resources including career services databases.
