The Opportunity
University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine (UABSOM) is currently seeking a dynamic and innovative executive leader to serve as its next Chair, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). This Chair will be an outstanding academic leader with a demonstrated track record of success in the research, teaching, clinical and administrative domains. UABSOM is a multi-campus medical school with its main campus in Birmingham and three regional campuses in Huntsville, Montgomery, and Tuscaloosa. The School of Medicine has nearly 800 students, more than 1,000 residents and fellows, and more than 1,600 full time faculty who attract almost $300 million in NIH funding through 27 academic departments, some of which rank in the top 10 nationally. The University of Alabama School of Medicine at Birmingham (UAB) is one of the premier research-intensive schools in the nation, ranked No. 24 overall and in the top 10 among public institutions in NIH funding. UAB currently is experiencing major and sustained investment and growth, due to both its exceptional research faculty and its culture of collaboration. 

The Role
Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Medicine & Dean of the UAB School of Medicine, Dr. Selwyn Vickers, the new Chair of PM&R will have programmatic oversight and responsibility to advance the clinical, research, and education missions of this Department. UAB seeks a proven administrative leader with a track record of accomplishment in a complex academic medical center. The Chair will lead and develop a sizeable and diverse Department, ensuring adequate resources to support the planned expansion and replacement of the Spain Rehabilitation Center and overall expansion.

The UAB Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) is dedicated to the provision of the highest quality medical care to the citizens of Alabama and the Southeast, and to the development of new knowledge through clinical and basic biomedical research. Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must have: 1) MD, MD/PhD or DO with Board Certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, 2) Academic Rank of Associate or Full Professor, and 3) Administrative and leadership experience at an academic institution.
