Texas A&M University Libraries — Director of Preservation

Texas A&M University Libraries seeks a creative and dynamic professional to join the Texas A&M University Libraries as Director of Preservation. We are hiring one individual for a full-time position with an 11-month academic appointment. This is an open-track faculty search allowing applicants to indicate a preference for either a tenure-track/tenured position with research and service expectations or a non-tenure track position with professional service expectations. Applicants will be considered for the faculty titles of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor or Clinical/Instructional Assistant Professor, Clinical/Instructional Associate Professor, Clinical/Instructional Professor depending on qualifications.

Reporting to the Dean through the Associate Dean for Information Resources, the Director of Preservation is responsible for the continued growth and administration of the Texas A&M University Libraries’ preservation program for physical and digital collections in all Libraries holding locations. The Preservation Unit thrives on a proactive approach to fulfilling its mission and enthusiastically collaborates relationships within the Libraries, the University, and in the professional community. The Director provides strategic vision and management for preservation needs across the entire Libraries in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to address current and future challenges to long-term preservation and access to Texas A&M University’s heterogeneous collections found in six libraries and two offsite storage facilities. The Director administers the Preservation Unit through faculty and staff whose activities include: general collections book repair, commercial binding preparation, environmental monitoring, disaster planning, stacks maintenance, special collections and archives collections care, conservation, digitization, and digital preservation.

Tenure-track responsibilities include engaging in research activities leading to publications and national service to meet both the Libraries’ and the University’s requirements for tenure and promotion. Non-tenure track responsibilities include engaging in professional service at multiple levels with demonstrated national impact.

This position includes the title of the William and Susan Ouren Preservation Librarian.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution (or international equivalent)
  • At least 3 years of professional preservation-related experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of the preservation needs of print and digital materials within general circulating collections, special collections, and archives
  • At least 1 year of experience as a supervisor and team leader
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent customer service by creating inclusive and respectful environments
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and teamwork skills complemented by the ability to take initiative
  • Experience with digitization initiatives and digital projects
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Desired Qualifications:

  • Specialization in Cultural Heritage Preservation
  • Experience working in an academic setting
  • Experience working with conservation labs, audio/video/film collections, commercial binding, and collections care
  • Experience in project management

The Preservation Unit:
Founded in 2013, the Preservation Unit provides centralized services to the Libraries’ five libraries and two storage facilities; these services include general preservation, conservation, book repair, commercial bindery preparation, digitization, digital preservation, environmental monitoring, and disaster response and planning. In 2017, the Libraries completed renovations which resulted in a new large preservation space, conservation lab, digitization lab, quarantine room, and walk-in freezer totaling over 10,000 square feet of space. https://library.tamu.edu/research/preservation/

Salary/Benefits: Faculty rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience; minimum starting salary will be $72,000. Excellent benefits include health plan and paid life insurance; several retirement plans including TIAA; paid holidays; no state or local income tax.
