In Memoriam: Barbara A. Newsome, 1946-2021

Barbara A. Newsome, a former professor of social work at Mississippi Valley State University, died earlier this month at Greenwood Leflore Hospital in Greenwood, Mississippi. She was 74 years old.

Dr. Newsome was a graduate of Mary Manse College in Toledo, Ohio. She earned a master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a doctorate from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Newsome joined the faculty at Mississippi Valley State University in 2001 as an assistant professor in the social work department. During her tenure, Dr. Newsome served as the interim chair of the department, internship field coordinator, and the director of the master of social work degree program.

Earlier in her career, Dr. Newsome served as a social work professor at Medgar Evers College in New York, Norfolk State University in Virginia, and University of the District of Columbia.

Dr. Newsome retired from Mississippi Valley State Univerity in 2016.
