East Stroudsburg University — Residential Learning Coordinators

East Stroudsburg University seeks 3 energetic and student-centered Residential Learning Coordinators (RLC) to serve within the department of Residential and Dining Services. The RLC is a 9-month position, with the possibility of a summer contract. The RLC is a live-in professional who is responsible for the operation of up to two residence halls, housing between 230 and 450 students. The RLC works to frame the living and learning environment by providing services and programs focused on curricular and co-curricular experiences for residential students. This position reports to the Assistant Director for Residence Life and Facilities and supervises a graduate student and various levels of student staff personnel.

Job Responsibilities:
Supervision

  • Coordinate weekly staff meetings to provide relevant information and clear communication.
  • Conduct weekly or bi-weekly individual meetings with staff members.
  • Provide formal/informal evaluation and feedback regarding performance and expectations.
  • Monitor and maintain in-hall duty rotation systems.
  • Oversee and review staff performance within the community engagement model.
  • Facilitate staff development, professional development, and on-going training for the staff.
  • Oversee management of programming and staff development budgets.
  • Actively participate in the selection and training of student staff members.

Community Development

  • Monitor and assist student staff with implementing the Community Engagement Model
  • Support the programming and policy-making efforts of Residential and Dining Services to create a positive living environment and facilitate the development of students.
  • Incorporate the mission, vision, and values of Residential and Dining Services into our hall communities.
  • Create and maintain a student development-focused environment.
  • Support the academic mission of the institution.
  • Assess and evaluate program outcomes.
  • Attend programs and events and maintain visibility in the hall/community.
  • Advise the local Community Board, including advising the board’s executive team and general assembly. Attend all Community Board general meetings.

Administration

  • Serve on various committees or initiatives as assigned or approved by the supervisor. Committees and initiatives may include Recruitment and Selection, Training and Development, any of our semester. service initiatives, teaching RA (Resident Assistant) Class sessions, Residence Hall Association, Moses Society or NRHH (National Residence Hall Honorary) Advising.
  • Attend Residence Life staff training, as well as related professional development opportunities within Residential and Dining Services and Student Affairs.
  • Attend and participate in weekly Residence Life meetings.
  • Meet individually with the Assistant Director for Residential and Dining Services or your assigned immediate supervisor.
  • Coordinate hall openings and closings.
  • Conduct weekly occupancy audits, facilitate room changes, and support other administrative requests from Central Office, as necessary.

Facilities and Environment Management

  • Participate in scheduled fire drills in the residence hall once a semester.
  • Maintain open communication with hall support staff (Housekeeping, Facilities, etc.).
  • Coordinate pre-break room checks and oversee all health and safety inspections.
  • Assist in emergency situations as needed.

Crisis Management and Campus Support

  • Provide leadership during crises in the residence hall and in the greater campus community.
  • Participate in a rotating weekly on-call system providing emergency assistance to staff and residents.
  • Provide duty coverage during one university break.
  • Become familiar with and follow institutional and departmental guidelines regarding emergencies.
  • Assist agencies such as ESU (East Stroudsburg University) Police Department, Stroud Fire Department, and other campus and city entities in the case of an emergency.
  • Provide student staff with thorough emergency response training.

Staff Training and Development

  • With direction from the Assistant Director for Residence Life, develop and implement annual training and development experiences for the Residence Life staff team.
  • Participate in the construction and facilitation of the Resident Advisor class, a component of the annual recruitment and selection process Residence Life.

Organizational Recruitment and Selection 

  • With direction from the Assistant Director for Residence Life, plan, lead and evaluate all recruitment efforts for Residence Life at both the student staff, graduate, and professional levels.
  • Work closely with Human Resources, Graduate Studies, and other campus entities to appropriately attract, employ, and manage talent for the organization.

Student Engagement and Leadership

  • Support, in alignment with a curriculum geared toward organizational engagement as a division, a
    leadership platform that focuses on personal and communal involvement within the residence halls
  • Participate in the development of the four student organizations housed within Residential Services. These organizations are the Residence Hall Association, Moses Society (Resident Advisor Honorary), Student Staff Council, and the National Residence Hall Honorary.
  • Invest in the growth of the Community Board model for all residence halls, challenging Residence Life staff to create opportunities for residents to lead where they live.

Assessment and Evaluation

  • With direction from the Assistant Director for Residence Life, construct, implement and guide annual curricular and programmatic assessment and evaluation measures for Residence Life.
  • Contribute to the annual development of organizational strategic planning, goal setting, program evaluation, and policy review.

Student Behavior and Accountability

  • Clearly communicate, interpret, and enforce department and university policies to staff and students.
  • Ensure staff members are appropriately confronting and documenting behavioral issues and concerns.
  • Review all incident and police reports and communicate with Student Conduct and the Dean of Students when necessary.
  • Adjudicate student conduct cases, track sanction completion, refer cases as needed, and coordinate and consult with supervisor regarding elevated level conduct cases or ongoing situation of concern.
  • Provide programs and other proactive educational interventions to minimize behavioral issues.

Student Relationships

  • Get to know residents and maintain a prominent level of visibility.
  • Serve as a resource or referral for information concerning university life.
  • Promote student involvement in residence hall activities, hall governance, and general co-curricular campus life.
  • Provide support or referral for residents with academic, personal, or career concerns.
  • Demonstrate an ethic of care for students with specific academic or personal accommodations.
  • Serve as primary liaison to your residents’ parents.

Ethical Standards

  • Act as a positive role model always (on and off-campus)
  • Maintain a professional attitude and manner while employed by the university.
  • Monitor and maintain a professional online presence (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
  • Know and abide by local, state, federal laws.
  • Maintain confidentiality for sensitive and FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) protected information.

Professional Development & Presentations

  • Facilitate periodic professional development sessions for departmental and campus community members.
  • Engage with regional and national professional development agencies to enhance learning and development.
  • Attend monthly professional development experiences that support the goals of the division as a
    representative of Campus Life and Inclusive Excellence.

Summer Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Summer School or Summer Conference Residential Learning Coordinator.
  • Work in the central office providing support and guidance to prospective and incoming students.
  • Serve on-call as a part of a summer duty rotation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree obtained from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • One or more years of post-graduate professional experience
  • Must possess:
    • understanding of individual and group development and educational interventions
    • experience with student conduct and crisis intervention
    • knowledge of computer systems such as Microsoft Office and student tracking databases (The Housing Director, Guardian, Maxient, Banner, StarFish)
    • effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to lead during change.
    • must possess collaborative and collegial working relationship competencies.
    • ability to function effectively in a high-energy work environment with constant demands from a variety of sources.
    • interest and ability to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment.
  • A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in College Student Personnel/Student Affairs or equivalent educational program that demonstrates support for students within the college environment.
  • Significant progressive Residence Life or related higher education experience in each of the job responsibility.

Work Hours: 
Monday through Friday, 8AM through 4:30PM and as business needs demand.

Annual Salary: 
$38,009.92. Final selection will be based upon a successful interview and background check. All candidates must furnish proof of eligibility to work in the U.S. at the time of employment. Reimbursement for interview and relocation expenses are not available for this position.
