University of California, Berkeley — Vice Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion

The University of California, Berkeley seeks a collaborative, solutions-oriented, and accomplished visionary leader to serve as the next Vice Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion (VCEI) and Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) during these unprecedented times in higher education.

The VCEI/CDO will serve as the campus’ chief strategist for transformative and institutional change related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. In this role, the VCEI/CDO will utilize best practices in the field to incubate and innovate new paradigms/frameworks, and to implement strategies and tactics that infuse the principles of equity and inclusion into the ethos of the academic enterprise, administrative departments, and the entire Berkeley campus, while establishing mechanisms for measurable outcomes towards transformative change. The VCEI/CDO will work at both the local and system-wide levels to create a shared sense of responsibility for moving the strategic initiatives of the campus forward among various campus constituencies and governing bodies with the aim of collective impact and sustained cultural shifts.

The VCEI/CDO will dually report to the Chancellor and the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost and will serve on the Chancellor’s Cabinet and Council of Deans as well as on key strategic and decision-making committees for campus and the UC system. The VCEI/CDO will lead Berkeley’s efforts to cultivate and sustain a diverse set of financial and other resources to support effective management of programs and initiatives that advance the campus’s equity and inclusion goals.

Ideally, the successful candidate will hold a terminal degree and have a proven record of innovative organizational change management grounded in the theory and practice of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging combined with a keen political awareness about the complexities and nuanced situations experienced in a public university setting.

The Division of Equity and Inclusion (E&I) provides expertise, leadership, and accountability to address systemic inequities for all members of the UC Berkeley community through engaged research, teaching, and public service, and by expanding pathways for access and success and promoting a healthy and engaging campus culture. The Division delivers a range of direct equity-based services, programmatic support, advice, and consultation across all campus communities including undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, staff, and faculty. A complete listing of the current programs and reporting units may be found at the E&I website.
