ABOUT THE POSITION
The Long Beach Community College District is looking to hire one (1) full-time tenure track Ethnic Studies Instructor commencing with the 2021 fall semester. The primary teaching assignment involves teaching Introduction to Ethnic Studies as well as other courses in the instructor's field of expertise, and/or courses such as Introduction to Race and Ethnicity, Introduction to Chicana/o Studies, and/or Introduction to African American Studies. The assignment may include the following responsibilities: contributing to the creation of an Ethnic Studies Program, reviewing and developing curriculum, mentoring students, advising student clubs, contributing to department level student learning assessment, planning and program review, and participating in the shared governance process. The teaching assignment may be at our beautiful Liberal Arts campus, state of the art Pacific Coast campus or other college teaching locations. Assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online and are subject to change as needed.     DUTIES:
    All candidates must demonstrate
    Evidence of a sensitivity, understanding, and ability to manage the classroom environment AND effectively provide instruction to community college students of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

    Candidates must also meet one of the following qualifications under 1 – 4.
    1. Master's degree in Ethnic Studies, Chicana/o Studies, African-American Studies, AsianAmerican Studies or Native American Studies; OR
    2. Bachelor's degree in Ethnic Studies, Chicana/o Studies, African American Studies, AsianAmerican Studies, or Native American Studies AND Master's degree in History, Sociology, Education, Urban Planning, Political Science, Anthropology, Public Policy, American Studies, or Women's Studies
    3. Possess a valid California Community College instructor credential, specific to the discipline, per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990).
    4. Possess a combination of education and professional experience that is equivalent to the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit a Supplemental Equivalency Application in addition to all other required materials

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An M.A. or Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies, Chicana/o Studies, and/or African American Studies
  • A strong educational emphasis in Ethnic Studies, Chicana/o Studies, and African American Studies
  • Evidence of innovation, scholarship, or leadership in the teaching of Ethnic Studies, Chicana/o Studies, and African American Studies or courses in related fields.
  • Two years of recent experience teaching Ethnic Studies-related courses to college students, especially at the community college level.
  • Evidence of a commitment to equitable teaching outcomes.
  • Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of working with students from diverse cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, academic, and disability backgrounds.
  • Evidence of the ability to use a variety of teaching strategies that encourage retention while successfully challenging a diverse student population.
  • Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively utilizing verbal, written, and online communication skills.
  • Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Long Beach City College.
  • Desire and demonstrated ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.
