General Purpose:
Yale University is seeking a Vice President, Human Resources (CHRO). Appointed by the President and reporting directly to the Senior Vice President of Operations, the CHRO will have responsibility for all aspects of Human Resources across Yale University and will serve as a trusted advisor, and partner.

The CHRO will oversee talent acquisition and development, union and employee relations, policy, classification, compensation, organizational development, benefits, wellness, operations, and HRIS. The individual will provide strategic leadership by articulating the human resources strategic vision, current and emerging workforce needs, and plans to the executive management team.

The CHRO must embody Yale’s commitment to the principles of the university-wide focus on diversity, inclusion, and belonging, and carry forward university-wide initiatives and communicate in a variety of institutional settings the value and importance of diversity, equity, access, and inclusion. The CHRO must lead the university’s broad effort to cultivate a culture of integrity, trust, and honesty, as well as to recruit, mentor, and retain exceptional individuals of diverse backgrounds.

The successful candidate will be a highly accomplished Human Resources (HR) leader with a passion for supporting complex, diverse workforces, and a proven record of leading a human resources function through change and transformation agendas. Most certainly, the successful candidate must have a passion and drive for Yale’s mission to improve the world today and for future generations through outstanding research and scholarship, education, preservation, and practice. The CHRO should have experience with union relations and community engagement.

Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10 or more years of experience managing a large human resources organization or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


  • Proven ability to attract, retain, develop, and effectively mobilize a diverse group of talent. Proven track record of successfully leading complex HR operations through periods of change.
  • Demonstrated record in creating, fostering, and supporting programs that address equity, inclusion & diversity.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast, high intensity, deadline driven environment, dealing with multiple projects. Ability to inspire and motivate HR and other colleagues with whom the individual will work from across the university.
  • Demonstrated experience cultivating relationships with members of the university community regardless of status, and the sophistication and executive-level presence to work at the most senior levels including leadership and the board.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills, with understanding of organizational dynamics and union relations.
  • Preferred Education and Experience: Prior experience in higher education including at a major research university. Advanced degree in business, human resources, or related field preferred.
