Williams College seeks an Associate Director for Inclusive Learning Environments of the Davis Center.  Named for scholar-activists W. Allison Davis ’24 and John A. Davis ’33 and part of the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the Center catalyzes broad campus engagement with complex issues of identity as they affect intellectual, creative, and social life. Collaborating with all sectors of the college community—students, staff, faculty, academic departments and programs, and alumni—and with off-campus partners, the Davis Center initiates and supports a rich variety of programs that seek to foster dialogue about access, equity, and inclusion at Williams and elsewhere.  Its work is central to the core academic and institutional values of the college that center and prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion.  To learn more about the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion visit http://diversity.williams.edu/. Reporting to the Director of the Davis Center, the Associate Director will foster inclusive learning environments throughout the college by developing workshops and educational opportunities for faculty, staff, and students, as well as by developing and fostering partnerships with various offices, academic units, and student groups. Learning environments are defined here to include all dimensions of undergraduate experiences at a residential, liberal arts college; therefore we understand the need for all learning environments to be inclusive—from classrooms to athletic fields, to dining halls, the stage, and beyond.  The Associate Director will work closely with students to understand the student experience and generate student-centered approaches to and engagement with inclusive learning environments.  From this student-centered perspective, the Associate Director will partner with academic units and staff campus-wide, becoming a leader and a resource on building and sustaining inclusive learning environments, inclusive pedagogy methods and approaches, as well as on inclusive curriculum initiatives.

The Associate Director will have deep knowledge of and experience working with constituents around issues of race, ethnicity, disability, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, religion, socioeconomic status, nationality, and first-generation status. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will have experience with and excel at working in a community that is broadly diverse.  They will have demonstrated success in working with historically underrepresented or underserved groups and an understanding of explicit and implicit bias and associated power dynamics.  They will collaborate with others in the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and be able to work with many different individuals, offices, and academic units on campus.  In a cover letter, applicants should describe how they will embrace the College’s commitment to fostering a fully inclusive community, as well as their relevant work experience.  A terminal degree is preferred, and five to eight years of related professional experience is required.

The Associate Director’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Developing and leading workshops and facilitating conversations for faculty and staff on inclusive pedagogy and inclusive learning environments;
  • Leading conversations on stereotype threat, perceived preparation gaps, intolerance, imposter effect, microaffirmations and microaggressions, bias in curricula;
  • Disseminating research and engaging faculty and staff on best practices for inclusive pedagogy and learning environments;
  • Actively partnering with constituents on campus whose work is central to supporting student learning and engagement;
  • Building bridges between academic units and students, particularly those from groups underrepresented on campus;
  • Developing and coordinating Davis Center programs for students to pursue racial justice and/or gender/sexuality internships or independent study through summer opportunity grants; facilitating application and selection process, providing on-going support and collaboration, identifying faculty and staff advisors;
  • Supporting students and providing them with tools for contributing to increasing inclusivity in the classroom and in other learning environments;
  • Advising several student affinity groups; and helping individual students navigate challenging moments and situations; and
  • Supporting existing workshops and programming offered by The Davis Center/Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

This position is a full-time, year-round appointment. Some evening, night, and weekend hours are required. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
