Salary Range: $71,000 – $81,000 / Year

The Teaching + Learning Commons (the Commons) is the campus-wide innovative infrastructure for comprehensive faculty and student support. It is the executive branch of the EVC for advancing teaching excellence and student success.

The mission of the Commons is to advance student success through teaching excellence and comprehensive academic student support; to be an incubator for student academic success innovations; to increase access to education on campus and beyond; and to advance equity and inclusion within the organization and through its programs and services. Through six unique but integrated hubs, the Commons’ work encompasses four areas: instructor support to advance teaching excellence; undergraduate and graduate student support to advance student success at UC San Diego and beyond; intellectual and professional development of graduate and undergraduate students, including Commons’ student employees; and equity and inclusion for all UC San Diego students, staff, and educators.

The Academic Achievement Hub provides programming that serves as interactive, academic spaces designed to reinforce and extend student learning in physical and/or virtual environments. These environments offer a wide variety of comprehensive support services and programs to enhance student success, retention, and completion rates.

Under general direction of the Academic Achievement Hub (AAH) Director, the Associate Director provides leadership in the delivery of academic services and programs that align with best practices in retention. The Associate Director assists in the oversight of the departmental programs, including tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, student success programs serving campus wide transition programming, including outreach, academic recovery and other academic support.

Oversight includes hiring, training, supervision, project management and evaluation of programs. As a member of the AAH Leadership team, the Associate Director participates in reporting, strategic planning, budget forecasts, and articulation of mission and vision of the AAH. The position includes administrative and supervisory responsibilities. The Associate Director serves on UCSD and UC system-wide committees regarding academic progress and retention of students. As a senior member of the AAH, will act in place of the Director as needed.

The incumbent will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ability, gender, identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds present in the Teaching + Learning Commons and university. The programs of the AAH promote inclusive, innovative and equity-focused student support that requires broad partnerships with faculty, staff, students and the community.

Overtime may be required. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise professional staff, fostering innovation, service, and accountability. Excellent ability to delegate and assign tasks, monitor production and quality of work, set clear and reasonable performance standards, and develop staff to their highest potential.
  • Advanced skills and demonstrated experience in planning, resourcing and monitoring effective training delivery.
  • Demonstrated project management skills; Strong and creative organization, analytic, and decision-making/problem-solving skills; Strong ability to work independently, establish and revise priorities to shifting deadlines.
  • Solid knowledge of undergraduate and graduate student development theories and principles of higher education to explain college student behavior, student development and departure, including psychosocial theories, cognitive theories, and integrative theories; Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student population.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral, written, and presentation skills.
  • Extensive experience and knowledge in multicultural competencies and academic intervention, working with students to assist in academic programs affirming ethics and values. Excellent knowledge, skills, and sensitivities in working with culturally diverse constituents and communities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing, analyzing, and monitoring budgets; Knowledge and experience in managing funds designated for special programs.
  • Supervisory skills to hire, train, and provide coaching and guidance to student workers and student interns.
  • Knowledge of how learning skills issues apply to a research institution. Knowledge of instructional strategies to promote learning.


  • Bachelors degree in Education Studies, STEM disciplines, Cognitive Science, Multicultural and Diversity Studies, or Social Justice Education with four to five (4-5) years full time, professional supervisory experience in the fields of tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, learning assistance, or other areas of retention based academic student support programming in a higher education setting.
