Two African American College Presidents Announce They Are Stepping Down

Alabama A&M University President Andrew Hugine, Jr., announced his retirement, effective December 31, 2021. Before becoming the eleventh president of Alabama A&M University in 2009, Dr. Hugine worked for 30 years at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, where he also served as president. President Hugine earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics from South Carolina State University and a doctorate in higher education/institutional research from Michigan State University in East Lansing.

Emerson College in Boston announced that President Lee Pelton would step down in June to lead the Boston Foundation. Dr. Pelton, the 12th president of Emerson College and the college’s first Black president, started in the role in 2011. Before taking the reins of the liberal arts college, Dr. Pelton served as president of Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, for 13 years. Dr. Pelton is a graduate of Wichita State University in Kansas, where he majored in English and psychology.  He earned a Ph.D. in English and American literature from Harvard University.
