The Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver (DU) invites applications for an Assistant Professor of the Practice in the department of Business Information Analytics (BIA) starting September 1, 2021. DU is the oldest independent university in the Rocky Mountain region, with approximately 11,500 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The Department of Business Information and Analytics merges the disciplines of Information Technology, Statistics and Operations Management into a department focusing on the key needs of todays organizations to create, manage and understand the wealth of information they possess. Department of BIA offers a masters in Business Analytics and an undergraduate major in business analytics with minors focusing on business analytics or statistics. Building on a legacy of leadership and first-mover advantage, the Department offers rigorous academic instruction, enjoys strong industry support and has 18 full-time faculty members. Position Summary
The Assistant Professor of the Practice is a non-tenure track line and is expected to teach eight courses throughout the academic year, which may include summer, fall, winter or spring quarters in the areas of business statistics and analytics, database, predictive analytics, data mining and visualization, project management, simulation, advanced data management platforms (AWS, Azure, etc), and/or optimization. Teaching responsibilities may include both undergraduate and graduate level courses using traditional, hybrid, hyflex, and online delivery methods taught during the day, night, or weekend.

The Assistant Professor of the Practice will work collaboratively with the Department Chair to develop and deliver courses in alignment with departmental and college initiatives. Additionally, the position will be instrumental in creating corporate partnerships to enhance industry connections and develop relationships for undergraduate and graduate capstone courses that will be implemented through the Center for Analytics and Innovation with Data (CAID).

At the Assistant Professor of the Practice rank, the appointment is initially a one-year contract, renewable up to an additional two years pending satisfactory performance. Additional contracts may be awarded following a formal performance review. Position is expected to begin on September 1, 2021.

Faculty members are expected to participate in department and college faculty meetings and engage in service activities. Working effectively and collegially with diverse groups of students, faculty, staff, and/or community members is an integral part of the job responsibility.

Essential Functions
Teaching: The University of Denver follows the quarter system, where classes meet for 10 weeks during the fall, winter and spring quarters followed by a final exam period. There may also be opportunities to teach during the 10 week summer quarter and/or courses in the Colleges online MBA Program. Professors are expected to attend all scheduled class sessions and to be involved in curriculum and pedagogy development, creating learning objectives, syllabi creation and management, timely and consistent grading, classroom management, student advising, student meetings and mentoring, testing/quizzes, instruction assessment, and professional development in educational topics. Teachers are also expected to be responsive in student communications.

Research and Scholarship: As part of maintaining faculty qualifications for accreditation, the Assistant Professor of the Practice is encouraged to engage in professional and/or academic efforts to maintain currency and represent the University and industry; for example, research efforts, speaking engagements, professional memberships, etc. Publications in scholarly or practitioner journals are encouraged. Our innovative environment nurtures many forms of creativity and inquiry.

Service: Faculty are expected to participate in the academic life of the Department of Business Information and Analytics and Daniels College faculty meetings, assurance of learning, curriculum development, and the advising of students.

Assistant Professors of the Practice are also encouraged to be professionally engaged through either industry or academic affiliations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of teaching methods and/or curricular perspectives to effectively engage diverse populations and learning styles.
  • Know how to appropriately write, speak, and perform within a diverse, global business environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in business analytics, statistics, information technology, management information systems, decision science, or related discipline. Other degrees (finance, marketing, management, or similar) will be considered with evidence of strong analytical training and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated potential for teaching experience in multiple areas such as business statistics and analytics, database, predictive analytics, data mining and visualization, project management, simulation, advanced data management platforms (AWS, Azure, etc), and/or optimization.
  • Proven portfolio of business skills, developmental experiences, and successes.
  • Experience with teaching or extensive work experience with one or more of the following: Excel, Programming (such as R, Python, etc.), or Database (such as Access, SQL Server, Oracle, etc.).
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of multiculturalism, diversity, and inclusivity which may be demonstrated through involvement and participation in projects and initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications

  • DBA or PhD in Business, Information Systems, or a closely related field from an AACSB or EQUIS-accredited institution.
  • Experience in team and experiential learning through class and work and understand the transfer of classroom knowledge/skills to the workforce.
  • Experience working with real businesses and integrating their problems into class scenarios or projects.
  • Experience teaching at an AACSB accredited institution with excellent teaching evaluations.
  • Recent relevant industry experience.
  • Experience learning and teaching others to use new technology.
  • Intellectual contributions to the business community (e.g. consulting, presentations, publications or conference proceedings).
  • Ability to conduct scholarly research which is publishable in quality academic or practitioner outlets.
  • Business Analytics skills and tools certifications such as PMP, Azure Data Scientist, AWS Certification, etc.

Salary Grade Number
The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $110,000 – $120,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
